Times Square

We head to New York City to watch the ball drop and will spend the month celebrating the city that refuses to sleep or even stand still.  This busy area was renamed in 1904 to mark the opening of new headquarters of The New York Times Newspaper.  Wanting the occasion to be spectacular, owner Alfred Ochs threw a huge party on New Years Eve to christen the new building--the tallest in the city at that time.  Other buildings may top it in height today, but the party is still going strong.

As the area grew to accommodate half a million workers commuting through the area and another million shoppers and visitors, advertisers began to capitalize on the exposure with fabulous signs known locally as "spectaculars".  Each company tries to top the next with bigger and bolder signs boasting the latest in digital technology.
