Summer Olympic Games
Beijing, China
and the World
|

Although the first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC, the modern Olympics truly began in 1896 in Athens when the first games governed by the International Olympic Committee took place. 241 participants from 14 nations attended those games. In 2004, Athens again played host to the games with nearly 11,100 competitors from 202 countries.
The Olympics have survived wars, boycotts, drug scandals, violence, apathy, and politics to endure as the highest competitive honor able to be achieved by an athlete.
Modern journalism, television, and the internet bring a new vibrancy to the games. Instead of reading about winners in the daily paper days later, countrymen now can watch and cheer on their athletes live. They can learn the trials and drama behind the athletes, embrace their unique personalities, and feel a sense of pride for their country.
Fan favorites for the summer games are many with gymnastics as the frontrunner overall. Also scoring high on the must watch lists are swimming, diving, beach volleyball, track and field, basketball, and soccer. Are you ready to gather around the television and root on your athletes?
