Pontocho
Street, Kyoto, Japan
|

If you enjoy colorful nightlife, you’ll love Kyoto’s Pontocho Street near the eastern banks of the Kamo River. Lying along a narrow path no wider than two meters are adjoining restaurants, bars and chaya (“teahouses” owned by women known as okami-san.) Every night, waves of people sweep through Pontocho. It has a reputation as a lively, elegant and tasteful street.
Pontocho
Street lies in Gion, Kyoto's most famous traditional district. It owes its celebrity to its teahouses where geisha have been entertaining their wealthy customers for centuries. Hanging cherry blossoms adorn the night sky in Maruyama Park, while the light 'clop-clop' of Maiko girls walking along the streets can be heard echoing through
the street. Marking the full arrival of spring in Kyoto, the annual traditional dance, Miyako-odori, has begun. Red lanterns dangle from the lattice windows and walls of Tea houses. To have a beautiful Kamogawa forever is the wish of the Kyoto people.
On the other hand, Kyoto is not simply protecting its old traditions and culture, but is rather building upon the rich traditions of predecessors as a foundation for open domestic and international exchange. It is a city which maintains a revolutionary spirit, a city of ideas and the cultural capital of Japan, constantly creating new traditions. In a partnership of trust with the people, efforts are made to create a "relaxing lifestyle in a vibrant city", as a positive response towards the new era, while simultaneously protecting and developing traditional culture. Kyoto is a true jewel - Japan's asset and the world's treasure.
Come celebrate spring with us in Japan. We are sure to be inspired!

Guest Street Artist
Terry McAuliffe

Hi! I’m Terry … Terry Scraps … I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I was when I was given this opportunity! And not sharing the news with my cyber-scrapping friends was one of the hardest things I’ve done!
I’ve been scrapping for 8 years and am totally addicted. And, like most scrappers, I enjoy collecting supplies as much as I enjoy actually using them! I started out by attending a scrapbook workshop and quickly discovered that the simple “sticker sneeze” wasn’t quite my style. I enjoy trying new techniques and adding depth and texture to my layouts. I adore ribbons and flowers and can’t seem to finish a page without them.
My hubby is wonderfully supportive and has learned to never, ever fold a tourist brochure or ticket stub! My 3 kids tolerate my hobby, reluctantly allowing me to take a photo from time to time. We share a house with 2 dogs and 3 cats. Yes, even the pets are not excluded from my scrapbooks!
I discovered ScrapStreet in June of 2006 and everything just seemed to “click.” I love the creatve challenges and, of course, evil Bingo! Even my alter ego, Hello Kitty, fits my board personality!
Thanks ScrapStreet for this wonderfully fun opportunity! And, ladies, keep on eye on the Guest House … I think there might be birthday party this month!
