The
Freedom Trail
|

This month we travel to one of the most historically significant locations in the United States—The Freedom Trail in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1951, journalist William Scholfield suggested linking historic sites in the city of Boston so that visitors and residents could find them with ease. This 3 mile walk follows a painted red line linking 16 locations from Boston Common through downtown and out to Charleston. It takes 2 to 3 hours to walk, not including time spent inside each location, and covers more than 250 years of American history.
The Freedom Trail begins in Boston Common, one of the oldest parks in the country located directly across from the State House recognizable by its 23 carat gold dome. Together, they form the center of the state government and have been home to soldier training, public hangings, and a variety of other political activities. Further down the trail, we come to the first public school in America founded by the Puritans in 1635 and once attended by Ben Franklin, Sam Adams, and John Hancock. We continue on to the Naval Yard and the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat in the world. Finally, we end at the Bunker Hill Memorial standing 221 feet in the air and commemorating the first battle of the Revolutionary War.
This month we enjoy history and
tradition in our countries, cultures, and families!
