 International Bathtub Regatta

Dinant, Belgium

t

Dinant is picturesque town built along the river and into the side of large cliffs giving it a beautiful appearance and providing a variety of activities.  Water sports, hiking, cable cars, and other outdoor adventures are available for those who want to enjoy the nice weather.  Shopping, spa locations, and wonderful food should also be a part of your visit.  The city's landmark, The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, appears to rise above the small buildings as if it were watching over all who enter casting a peaceful shadow.

Ready for some fun?  Join us as we head to Dinant, Belgium for the International Bathtub Regatta! More of a lark than a serious competition, this event is open to seaworthy bath tubs of all classes, from all nations. The exact rules are vague, but vessels can be of any design — seemingly the more bizarre the better — and there must be at least one bath tub providing buoyancy. Motors are strictly forbidden, so is the deliberate sinking of a fellow competitor. Prizes are awarded by an impartial panel of judges for speed, technical endeavor, beauty, novelty, and representation of the town.  More than 250 participants in a flotilla of original vessels made out of at least one bathtub race down the river Meuse with fun for everyone! Contraptions of every size and shape make their way upstream. And to cool off, participants throw buckets of water at each other. Even the beer-drinking spectators aren't protected from getting a dousing, as contestants hurl buckets of water their way. It ends up as one big free-for-all and fun for all who attend. This year's regatta is slated for August 15.

But Dinant is best known not for its bathtubs but as the center for copper and brass work called dinanderie. Artisans have been hammering out chandeliers, candlesticks, pulpits, etc, for church and home since the second century. And they're still at it today. Though the high point of this ancient art came in the Middle Ages, Charles of Burgundy put a stop to it when he sacked the town in 1466. It took 400 years to get it going again, but today, visitors can see the coppersmiths at work, using nearly identical methods, by walking through town while keeping an ear open for the ring of a hammer.

Guest Designer

Lisa Peppers

Hello everyone! My name is Lisa Peppers, also known as anabellpepper at every board I have ever joined. I live on California's central coast. My husband is active duty military and this is our second duty station in 12 years of military service. We met in the dorm at our first duty station and were married 3 months after we met. We will have been married for 11 years at the end of August. I was introduced to scrapbooking by his mom in 1997 after the birth of our first daughter. I was totally hooked after the birth of our second in 2001 and I have taken it to a whole new level with planning pages as I take photos of our new little boy. I am amazed that our poor 6 month old isn't blind due to all the camera flashes he has been exposed to since birth. I am so glad that scrapbooking has evolved since I started.  Cardstock still dominates what I create, but I love to add those punches with patterned papers. Online communities were the inspiration I needed to draw me out of my little box.  I was also drawn in by the possibilities made available by digital scrapbooking. Now I spend at least an hour every day playing with my supplies, whether they are digital or paper. I am on a design team for both styles of scrapping. I am a member of the creative team of Designs by Shelle and a design team member for The Scrap Stop, an online scrapbooking store. Regardless of how I get my pages done, I want to get my photos into albums with a little bit of information so that it doesn't get forgotten. I go home and I get so frustrated when I look at family albums and ask questions, but no one knows the answers. I want my children to know the answers when they ask questions about the photos in the albums I create.
