 Masai Mara Safari

Kenya, Africa

Welcome to Kenya and Masai Mara an area of gently rolling hills, woodland and acacia trees which is watered by the Mara and Talek rivers and opens onto the Serengeti plains of Tanzania. This breathtaking land is home to the Maasai, a proud semi-nomadic cattle-rearing people with a fascinating culture. They are divided into a number of sub-tribes some of which share the Mara region. They have a very special relationship with cattle which are essential to their life-style. The Maasai have survived a troubled history but are under increasing pressure to conform with modern society.

The Masai Mara Game Reserve is often called simply "The Mara" which is the Maa word meaning "Mottled" - a reference to the patchy landscape.  This mottled land includes four separate safari areas.  "Grassland" is most common, especially in areas of poor drainage, frequent fires or heavy grazing - supporting a wide range of herbivores which all prefer different grasses and shoots. "Bushland" is particularly vulnerable to fire and foraging elephants - the favorite place of rhino, lion, tiger, and other game animals. "Woodland" is often populated with acacia trees (with rich edible leaves) - where you might find monkey and giraffe. The Rivers are home of hippo and crocodile.

What will inspire us this month? The colors, the textures, the patterns? Perhaps the natural emotions and materials? Grab your animal attitude!  Lets get to scrapping!

Guest Designer

Lori Burdeshaw

Hi! I’m Lori Burdeshaw and I feel SO honored to be the guest designer this month! I’m supposed to tell everyone a bit about myself, but I blab so much on the board that I’m pretty sure everyone already knows everything.

Let’s see...I live in Alabama and I’m a 38 year old SAHM to Hannah (15) and Westley (12). I married my high school sweetheart and we just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary this summer. I’ve always been a photo fanatic—begging friends for pictures, torturing family members with my camera. Whether it’s remembering an event through a photo, or being able to see in an instant how much a child has changed from one year to the next, photos have always seemed like a little bit of magic to me. I was so excited when my cousin introduced me to her new hobby called “scrapbooking”. Not only did it involve taking pictures, but it showcased them…made them even better than they were in photo albums. I knew it was something I HAD to try. That was six years ago and I’m still hooked.

I met Spinkeeshy on another board and she invited me to check out ScrapStreet. I did and I never wanted to leave. It felt like I was a kid being invited into the coolest club. The talent here is amazing, but even more amazing is the atmosphere of friendship and support. I really love this place and feel so lucky to be a part of it.
