Overhaul Alley

  Christa Parker

Back to school… Time to buy new clothes, shoes, paper, pens and crayons, time to set the alarm clock early enough to get everyone up, dressed and fed to get them out the door in time to catch the bus. It’s time to get pictures of everyone in their first day of school outfits, getting on the bus, or while they’re packing their book bags.

But don’t forget to send your kids back to school in “scrappin” style. With all the bright and fun patterned paper that you can buy, your child will be the hit of the class. Send them to school with their decorated notebooks or pens, or altered book bag to match their altered lunch box. And don’t forget the teachers, start now on Christmas presents and alter a clipboard for all their important paperwork.

Design note: I cut all of the stars from patterned paper and used 3-D dots to lift them. I sanded and inked all the edges of the composition book. And I used a razor to distress the edges of the cardstock coupon words and then inked them. I used a red pen and drew lines to give the edges more definition.

School Composition Book by Kimberly Camarotti.  Supplies: Paper, Cardstock, Chipboard: Rusty Pickle, Tape: Heidi Swapp, Pen & adhesive: Tombow, Ink: Tsukineko, Other: Composition book (Target).

"Back 2 School" mini lunch pail by Jolene Johnston. Supplies: Paper: Doodlebug Design, Miss Elizabeth’s, Rub-ons: Doodlebug Design, Ink: Tsukineko, Chipboard: JoAnn, Paint: Making Memories, Ribbon: Offray.

Design note: This was a mini lunch pail from the $1 bin at JoAnn Fabrics. I altered it with a variety of school-themed products and will fill it with office supplies, headache relief and mints for my son's 1st grade teacher.

Design Note: My first ever altered item was a clipboard and it won a prize right off the bat! A few years later, I decided to make each of my son's preschool teachers and director a personalized clipboard. They were thrilled at the present, something pretty, but something they could - and promised, would! - actually use. This photograph was taken before the ribbon was added, but it's an easy and fun gift for any occasion!

Clipboard for Teacher by Lindsey Krauss. Supplies: Paper: SEI, American Crafts, Flowers: Scenic Route, Sticker letters: Arctic Frog, Other: Clipboard.
