As I sit in the
classroom, looking at the impossibly young faces of
my college freshmen, I am amazed that I have this
wonderful job. Every year, I am privileged to
teach such a wide variety of students. And
each and every semester, I learn from them.
What do they teach me?
Style. Each
one has his or her own. Some choose casual,
relaxed clothing with easy to mix and match options.
Others wear styles that express a certain group
belief--gothic, preppy, gangster. I know as
the semester progresses, so will the styles.
Some will become more daring, others more
conservative. They remind me that capturing
even little things like a favorite pair of shoes or
a certain hairstyle on a layout will be a precious
reminder of a fleeting time.
Emotion. The
late teens and early twenties are emotional times.
Students believe things strongly, feel them deeply,
and are certain that nothing will ever change those
views. They are brave and live without
apology--far less "politically correct" than adults.
I learn to not be afraid to journal real emotion.
To use poetry, story, lyrics to capture what I am
feeling right now--even if experience makes me
believe I may "grow out of it." Journaling in
the moment can really make a strong statement.
Freedom. Just
sprung from days filled with go here and do this in
high school, college students are in awe of the
choices and scheduling options available now.
They are open to trying new clubs, sampling classes,
listening to new ideas. It is far too easy for
me to fall into the "routine rut" of a working mom.
A life with go here and do this, until I forget that
I can have choices. Fortunately, I get this
reminder every September.
What have you
learned lately? Who taught you?
Wishing you
a month filled with learning,
