Awareness

 Jennifer Wuthrich

This month is national breast cancer awareness month and while this is somewhat of an uncomfortable topic for some people, I think it is also an important one.

Each year as I approach my “yearly” check-up my doctor always asks if I have been doing my regular exams each month after my monthly cycle. Each time when I get asked that question, until recently, I had to respond the truthful “no”.

Honestly, I didn’t really understand the importance of it nor did I really know how to do a self breast exam. So I brought these issues up with my doctor on my last visit. It was a wonderful experience to be not only shown the proper way to do a self-breast exam…but also gain more insight into the importance of early breast cancer detection.

Really the self-exam is not that big of a deal, but I still have to remind myself to do it! I think it is the fear in me that I might find something that keeps me from checking. The fear of the unknown of what I would do if I did find something abnormal.

Although cancer of any sort can be very scary, it is important for us as women to check ourselves, we can be the first to detect if something is wrong and getting treatment early gives us the best chance of survival. If you know of anyone in your life or around you that is suffering from breast cancer, reach out to them this month, send them a card and let them know you are thinking of them.

Journaling: Strength, Courage, Hope, Faith

Design notes: Recording memories like these are hard…but they are also healing.

Hope by Christa Parker. Supplies: Paper: Masterpiece Studios, Cardstock: Bazzill, Chipboard letters: Maya Road, Flowers: Making Memories, Paint: Making Memories, Eyelets: Making Memories, Other: ribbon & heart paper clip.

Design Notes: I made this card for my friend's 5 year party. She has been cancer free for 5 years, which is a big milestone for breast cancer survivors. Inside was a note printed on vellum about the donation that we made in her name to the Breast Cancer Society for research.

5 Years by Michelle McClung. Supplies: Paper: Basic Grey, Bling: Heidi Swapp, Other: Stickers, Ribbon.

Design notes: Emboss pink card stock with Cuttlebug stylized flowers folder.  This will need to be done by embossing 1/2 of the paper at one time.  You can add a bit of chalk, ink, or sand the embossed areas a bit to enhance the design.

Awareness by Debbie Sherman. Supplies: Paper: Breast Cancer Awareness scrapbook kit, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics, Embossing folder: Cuttlebug, Ribbon handmade pattern: Debbie Sherman, Ink: Ranger, Tsukineko, Gems: Heidi Swapp, Ribbon: Hobby Lobby.
