Discovery Drive

Lindsey Krauss

Each month a new and fabulous digital scrapper is showcased in Digital Discovery. This month, Gina Fensterer was chosen for her fun style and innate ability to stylize and create moods with her digital scrapping. Gina has an incredible talent for using very little yet conveying so much, just with apparently photo and color. If she uses embellishments, she uses them very sparsely, yet perfectly placed to just so enhance her story. Gina: simplicity at its very best; she makes it look so easy!

Designer's Note:

I rotated the journaling box and brackets to suit their placement on the page. The photo was originally in color. I used the grayscale option in Photoshop CS, then the auto levels for brightness and contrast. Finally, I manually adjusted brightness and contrast to achieve a striking look. The photo was also cropped and enlarged to fit the page. To contain the text to the journal box, I used the type tool box to contain words within the correct size.

Kiss by Gina Fensterer. Supplies: Background and paper: Cheryl Barber, in the “Charming” kit from scrapgirls.com, Alphas and brackets: in set 1 from “Charming” kit, Journal box and ribbon: Embellies set 2, “Charming” kit, and safety pin: Embellies set 1, also in “Charming” kit, Font: “Love Mom” from scrapbook.com.

Journaling: I just can’t resist stealing kisses from your sweet, soft, chubby cheeks. I love the smiles you give me, and the giggles and squeals of delight that you just can’t contain!

Amazingly Adorable by Gina Fensterer. Supplies: Background and paper: the “Festival” kit at ShabbyPrincess.com, Elements: the “Festival” kit at ShabbyPrincess.com, Flourish brushes: CottageArts.net, Font: Adorable.

Designer’s Notes: I used the color match tool in Adobe Photoshop CS to match the font color to the pink dots in the patterned paper. I did this also for the flourishes on the photo. To give the photo the almost fabric-like texture, I used the layer>textures option, and chose one to give just the right subtle texture. I also changed the opacity of the layer to soften the look.

Journaling: You are so adorably cute; I am just amazed with your cuteness.

Surf, Sand and Sun...by Gina Fensterer. Supplies: Background paper (blue) and tag: "Essence" kit by J Baechtold, Floral spray: by Rhonna Farrer - 2Peas Free kit, Torn background paper is personally created, Title font: Jokerman LET, Journaling Font: Alleycat ICG.

Journaling: "Surf, Sand and Sun Mean Lots of Beachy Fun: On a week-long visit to San Diego, I took T to the beach with W and C. Yes, it was just about as chilly as it looks in the overcast pictures, but how could we resist letting her play in the waves and the sand on her first visit to the ocean? She timidly set her toes in the waves and wet sand...but once she sat in the soft, white sand, she was happy. I can only imagine what she thought of the sand as she grabbed handfuls and let it pour through her fingers. At first I thought, "She'll never put it in her mouth; T just doesn't explore like that!" Then, I looked again, and she had a silly, sandy grin--she really did try to eat it!"

Designer's Note:

I couldn’t find suitable background papers, so I filled the entire background with black and added texture. To increase the textured look, I played with the opacity setting. I did the same for the white mat. The ribbons are off-set to add interest, and again, I changed the opacity settings on the rickrack to achieve the desired look. I used a text box to contain my text under the photo, and freehanded the outline with a thin brush. Then I added the flourishes for a quick, sophisticated, look!

Sunshine Bright by Gina Fensterer. Supplies: Black and white papers: my own design, Pink mat: “pink grunge” paper in the “Sweet Rubbish” kit by Sara Carling, Light pink and dark pink rickrack: Sara Carling in “Sweet Rubbish”, Black ribbon: Rhonna Farrer in a 2Ps free kit (April FreePEAkit), Flourish brushes: CottageArts.net, Font: Bradley Hand ITC TT-Bold.

Journaling: Every month on the 21st, I took pictures of Trinity to show how she changed over her first year. The morning sun on February 21st was incredible, creating a unique glow and casting shadows. This photo will always be one of my favorites, capturing a beautiful moment in Trinity’s life.

About the designer:

I'm a SAHM to two darling girls, two and a half and 11 months. They keep me busy, and I have more pictures to scrap than I can keep up with! We spend our days playing, baking, cooking (yes, I do let them help in the kitchen!), and going to the lake. I really enjoy being home with them.

I've been scrapping since I was in high school (10 years), have completed 20-some albums, and my style has changed more than I can describe. I love paper and digital scrapping, but can't say that I have one definite style. Trying new things is so fun I just can't settle into one style. Luckily, my husband enjoys looking through the albums I create for family, so he doesn't mind that this hobby of mine consumes many hours. He even has started to think about what kinds of photos I'd like to scrap, taking "artsty" shots and shots from all angles. I have the greatest family, and I suppose that without them, I wouldn't scrap nearly as much. I just can't stop creating keepsakes of our memories!
