Digibyte Boulevard

Free Software Review by Katey Green and Susan Wood

Welcome to our new digital scrapbook section …pause a while at the Boulevard and pick up some info on the hows and whys of Digital Scrapbooking. This month and next we are going to look at some totally free software (not trial software) that you can use to dip your toes into the digital waters. Please note that these are personal reviews from using the software.

This issue, we will look at some established software from Scrapbookflair and a newer more elaborate offering called Paint.NET.

Scrapbookflair Software:

This is a web community that allows free download of software and kits from the website to make scrapbook pages and albums. You can create your pages, save them as JPGS on your computer and/or print them out. You can also upload to the Scrapbookflair gallery via the software or export to other galleries.

The software is easy to use and there is a wide variety of templates and kits freely available. As with most things there are some drawbacks. The software lacks the ability to add drop shadows or to manipulate elements at angles. You can crop photos into shape, but not papers, so it is a basic add paper, photo and elements or use a ready made template. However, some of this has been thoughtfully overcome with some kits, where elements may be offered with a choice of angles or placements. Most outside bought digital kits will need some alteration in size if used within the software as it does not cope well with 300dpi kits. Once resized – taking care not to overwrite them - you are able to add the items to the separate file folders so that they can show up in the software when you run it.

All in all it is very nicely made software, being continually improved and is ideal to try out as a novice to digital scrapping. Being free, the value of course is excellent as there is no limit or charge for the downloads.
