Discovery Drive

  Lindsey Krauss

Each month a new and fabulous paper scrapper is featured here in Discovery Drive. This month, we spotlight Pia Salem-Lopez. Pia is a ball of energy on and off of her layouts – the word that comes to mind while flipping through her scrapbooks is BOLD…and beautiful! Whether it’s her color choice, choice of medium, gorgeous photos or strong shape, Pia’s design just jumps right off the page! Personality and passion, Pia’s got a flair for this art!

Journaling: months of pregnancy, one whole day of labor, 913 days of diaper, 2 ˝ years of broken sleep, 30 months of breastfeeding, moments of grief and frustration

Design Note: I love using circles in my layout so when I saw the layout of Jessica Sprague at Creating Keepsakes, I knew I wanted to use the same sketch in my layout. Through the use of the circles I was able to include six photos in one layout without having to sacrifice space. I also consider this layout close to my heart because I was able to tell my breastfeeding story!

Because I Love You by Pia Salem-Lopez. Supplies: Paper:  Cherry Arte East of India - Henna; Tropics – Tropica, Cardstock: Bazzill, Stickers: 7 Gypsies numero, Paint: Making Memories, Folder tab: My Mind’s Eye, Pens: Zig Writer and Uniball Signo, Dies and brad: Sizzix Ransom, Editing software: Adobe PhotoShop CS.

Dad by Pia Salem-Lopez. Supplies: Paper: 7Gypsies, Basic Grey Scarlet’s Letter – Revelation, Flourish: Fancy Pants Biggest Board, Stickers: Creative Imagination, Brads: Karen Foster, Ink: Staz-On, Rubon: Li’l Davis glitter, Stamp: Paper Salon (courtesy of Scrapbukan), Other: fiber, ribbon, charms and acrylic paint.

Journaling: A Dad is a person who is loving and kind, And often he knows what you have on your mind. He’s someone who listens, suggests and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends! He’s proud of your triumphs, But when things go wrong, A dad can be patient and helpful and strong. In all that you do, a dad’s love plays a part. There’s always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you’re even more glad, more grateful and proud just to call him your dad! Thank you, Dad … For listening and caring, for giving and sharing, But especially, for just being you! - Author unknown

Live Out Loud by: Pia Salem-Lopez. Supplies: Paper: Scenic Route - white blue grid, Cape Town - Penz Striped, Savannah – Sailmaker Lane, Cardstock: Bazzill, office die cut arrows, Pen: Sakura Souffle (courtesy of Scrapbukan).

Design note: This layout has geometric shapes (squares, stars, circles and rectangles) as inspired by the white blue ground background paper from Scenic Route. I placed a black square over a bigger square (base) and then place another shape which is a diamond. I embellished the layout with stars and circles trimmed from the papers as well.

Editor's note: I love the way Pia uses stars and arrows with her circles to give a lively feel.  Did you notice the doodling details around her photos--simply fabulous!

Journaling: (translation – “Mahal Kita” means “I Love You” in our language). One night, as I was carrying Ethan, he kept on playing with my hair. Peeved as I was, I asked him to stop. He then held me on the cheeks, turned my head towards his face … and said, “MAHAL KITA MOM.” This was the first time I heard this from him. I was stunned … and could only reply, “MAHAL DIN KITA ETHAN,” as I hug him. Truly, motherhood could be very rewarding!

“Mahal Kita Mom” by: Pia Salem-Lopez. Supplies: Paper: Fancy Pants Kewl - Groovy, Chipboard: Fancy Pants Biggest Board (flourishes and heart) and flower (fuschia pink), Cardstock: Bazzill, Alphas: BasicGrey Block (courtesy of Scrapbukan), Pen: Zig Writer, Uniball Signo, and Sakura Aqualip, Flower: Heidi Swapp, Journaling Block: Bam pop, Other: acrylic paint, button.

Design note: I’m loving freestyle! This layout is a proof that. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the scallops are hand drawn, the photo is slightly off the frame, and there are doodles on the letter chipboard! This photo is also one of my favorites!

About the designer

Hi! My name is Pia Salem-Lopez and I'm from the Philippines. I'm a mother to a very active and playful toddler, Ethan, and a wife to my ever supportive husband, Jeff.

I am a teacher by profession (that was before I became a stay at home mom) and a graduate of Communication Arts. I am also a very passionate scrapbooker. Ever since I started scrapbooking two years ago, I've been hooked to the hobby and the desire to become the family historian. For me, photos are the souls of my layouts! I guess because hubby and I share the same passion for photography.

I am currently designing for Scrapbukan, a local online scrapbook store in the Philippines. Recently, I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the DTs of Daisy Bucket Designs! I am also part of Scrappin' Moms, a group of moms actively promoting scrapbooking in our country through workshops and scrapbooking events.
