Creating a sketch from your layout. Many of us love to use sketches. But what about making sketches from a layout you just recently did for others to use? Here I will go thru the simple task of showing you how to take a layout and focus on the basics to make a sketch to share. This is all being done in Photoshop Elements 4.0. Elements is a wonderful program for the beginner scrapbooker who wants to do digital work.

Choose your layout. I chose this one because it has a strong structure, and simple shapes.

Create a new layer and using your paint bucket color it with about the same hue as your background paper.

Next is the circle that I used in the layout, using a solid color for every element of the design in different hues allows diversity from the user of the sketch. I used the shape tool for this process.

The next element is the torn wave bottom paper. Because I used a template to make the torn sheet, I don’t want to make the user think they have to do that. Using basic shapes is best for sketches. Keep it simple is the focus. Using the shape tool again in a hue between the circle and background I will add in another layer.

Add in your shapes for the photos, again using the shape tool. As a personal preference I do them in a darker color, making them the focus of the layout. I slightly tilted the shapes because even though I want to always keep it simple, I feel the movement of the pictures is a key element in the overall design.

Add in your title. I chose white to make it pop off the layout. All the hues you use make a difference when making a sketch that inspires others. Use the colors to showcase certain aspects.

Remove your original layout from the project, merge visible and save! Congratulations! You’re making Sketches!
