Cool Eats

  Jennifer Wuthrich

Growing up I couldn’t wait for the last day of school, I would begin counting down sometime right after Christmas break. I looked forward to the summer, the long nights and getting to sleep in the next day, pool parties, family vacations and our acres of fresh fruits and veggies. That’s right acres! I grew up on a small farm and each year as the summer approached I could smell the peaches and strawberries and I could see the yummy vegetables growing in our enormous garden.

My parents had good intentions they thought it would be good to teach us how to work hard and by keeping us busy we would stay out of trouble. We would spend hours out in the garden weeding only to be followed by hours of picking peaches, apricots or cherries. It was hard work, but the reward was sweet! Each night we would have fresh vegetables and fresh fruit. It made the “hard slave labor” (as we called it) worth it. Not only did these “treats” cool us off on a hot summer night…but they were good for us.

Journaling: Date: today. Time: Dinner. Place: My kitchen. Notes: My absolute favorite food in the whole world! I eat at least one a day if not more.

Designer tip: To do a reverse/mirrored title like I did, use both the paper from which you cut the letters out of and the letters that you cut out. The photo was altered in photoshop to make the tomato the only colored element. My last technique was to texture the cardstock on the top of the page. I sanded it with sandpaper, then used a brush to apply the ink.

Tomato, Tomato by Danielle LaFave.  Supplies: Cardstock: Bazzill, Patterned Paper: My Mind's Eye-Bohemia, Ink: Colorbox, Stickers: 7 Gypsies, Rub-ons: Imaginescence, Font: Century Gothic, Tag: 7 Gypsies, Pen: Sharpie, Digital Frame: Rhonna Farrar for 2Peas.

Sweet, Juicy, Fun! By Cindi Bisson.  Supplies: Cardstock: Paper Accents, Embossing Enamel: Ranger Ultra Thick, paper corrugator: Fiskars, inkpad: Tsukineko, Versamark, Alpha clips, cardstock book plate: Outrageous Daisy!, Transparency: , Hammerhill, Other: Large green brads, striped, strawberry stamp.

Journaling: Summer, 2005 Wilson’s Mills Farm.

Designer note: Digital strawberry image was printed onto acetate to add to the "wet/juicy" feeling. "JUICY" was created by pouring hot UTEE into letter shapes on a craft sheet, then attaching over the printed transparency. Red background cardstock stamped with strawberry image and Versamark inkpad. Yellow cardstock was corrugated for dimension.

Journaling: "Ah, tastes of summer! BBQ means good eat for anyone, but Trin's first corn on the cob was more than good--it was a pinky-raising, mouth-watering culinary delight. Nothing was sweeter to her than this corn that summer day."

Designer notes: I love changing colors to fit my photos, and this one was a blast. I changed the colors of the ribbon and the brackets to match the corn! I made the "yum" title appear like a stamp by creating two layers, erasing each with different brushes, then merging them.
