Warm Moments

 Dora Phillips

I love the warm colors of the fall season.  The shades of pumpkin, cinnamon, cocoa, sage, and gold indicate that it is time to move indoors and spend evenings with my family.  They represent the contrast between the crisp outdoor weather and the coziness of my living room.  I love the extra snuggle time with my family as we begin to hibernate.  I tend to associate our warm moments indoors with the warm colors that surround us during fall.

Of course, my extended family lives in Florida where fall is exactly the opposite.  Instead of heading inside to do puzzles and read by the fire, they race outside to enjoy as many sports and activities as they can fit in.  With the heat of the summer gone, they have soccer, tennis, football, and stay outside until the last moment of light fades.  Winter will come for them--just not the same way it does for us northern gals--and the fall fun will move inside though maybe not to the fireplace.  My sisters associate warm moments with the warm outdoor activities that fall brings for them.

What says warm to our readers?  Take a look at some of the layouts submitted for our Warm Moments Cover Contest.

Cover Winner!

Journaling: Maggie and Tucker lounging on the couch together. September 2007.

Mommas lovies by Michelle Boeckermann.  Supplies: Keepsakes Digital kit by Jill D-Zines, Velvet, stitch, torn paper actions: Atomic Cupcake, Fonts: Springtime, SA Cinta.

Design note: I used a desaturation action on the photo, and changed the texture to make it look like canvas. To add to the effect, I used an eraser brush/texture comb on the edges to create a torn/frayed look. To make the scalloped edge, I used the ribbon from Spa Holiday to create a template, and then used the clipping mask.

Blessings by Regina Fensterer. Supplies: "Thankful" by scrapbook.com, "Spa Holiday" by scrapbook.com, "Sweet Rubbish" by Sara Carling, desaturation action: Panos FX BW, Font: CK Duveeny.

Journaling: "Blessings often come to us in mysterious ways, but the best blessings are often the simplest ones, like sweet baby snuggles and head-nuzzles. This blessed and loving moment was share by Papa and Madelyn on her birthday, 6-25-2007"

Design note: I loved the step-down effect of the ribbon on the top of this sketch, so I used it a few more times throughout the layout. There are four staples near the ends of the ribbon and paper that are also layered and stepping, and I used3 green felt flowers with brads before or after each word to guide the eye through the step-down title.

Autumn Wagon Ride by Lindsey Krauss. Supplies: Paper, ribbon, chipboard alphabet, stickers: Daisy D's, Flowers: American Crafts Greenhouse felt, Sticker letters: American Crafts Thickers, S.E.I., Brads, Snaps: Making Memories, Ink: ColorBox fluid chalk, Other: rickrack, Sketch: Marilyn McKnight.

Journaling: Sep. 16, 2007 (hidden) An impromptu Sunday trip landed us apple picking, pumpkin picking and Hurd's Family Farm visiting. After helping Daddy pick out your pumpkins (one for each of us, of course!), you both sat quietly with all those orange pumpkins in the red wagon for a ride up the hill - poor Daddy pulling all the way! What a special autumn moment for me - pushing the wagon, following closely behind!
