Think back to the time when cutting was first
introduced. As four-year-old children, we
needed to figure out how to keep our thumbs up
to the sky while opening and closing the
scissors. It is quite a feat to orient the
paper and cut on the lines. Practice makes
perfect and we spent many hours in elementary
school cutting and making arts & crafts
projects. Scrapbooking brings us back to our
roots, gluing, trimming and creating, just in a
more sophisticated way. The technique of hand
cutting is the latest craze, and it is truly one
of my favorites! It makes sense that a skill
that has been honed for so many years would be
used so frequently by scrapbook artists.
Patterned paper is often filled with either bold
or small flowers, shapes and images that are
just dying to be hand cut! I love to look at a
piece of paper and see if a shape or even a
border pops out at me. Hand cutting and then
placing elements on pages instantly adds
dimension and interest. It is not just for
scrapbookers who love layers, but can easily
work on clean and simple layouts as well. All
this technique really requires is a strong
imagination and a steady hand. Some choose to
use small scissors and others rely on a craft
knife for cutting. The following layouts
showcase just how special hand cutting can be
when used as a design element. Read carefully
as each artist shares her special technique
below.

Design
notes:
I wanted to capture the city's colorful and
tropical personality in my layout so I used
vibrant colors and tropical accents. I hand
cut the leaves and flower petals from Fancy
Pants' Summer Soire Beach House patterned
paper, curling them up so they would stand
out a little more on the page. I used both
chipboard & rub-on flowers as accents. I
painted the chipboard letters in bright
colors to make them stand out. I finished
the layout with colorful stitching along the
edge.

Puerto Rico by Ronda Palazzari. Supplies: Paper, Chipboard, Letters,
Rub-ons, Stamps: Fancy Pants Designs,
Floss: DMC, Paint: Making Memories, Pen: Stampin' Up!,
Thread: JP Coats.
Journaling:
San Juan, Puerto Rico was such an amazing
stop on our Caribbean Cruise. We toured the
city mostly on foot starting at the El
Morro. From there we walked to Old Town
stopping along the way at historical/notable
sites including the Governors' Mansion.
Beautiful, Colorful city.

Design
notes:
I cut a small strip from the Making Memories
polka dot paper just until I got to the
orange flower, then I hand-cut around the
flower
to make one piece across the top. After I
applied the Heidi Swapp rub-on onto
cardstock, I hand-cut around it and applied
it to the page with pop dots. I added the
Cloud9 epoxy stickers to create water
splashes.

Design
notes:
The entire bottom portion of this layout was
creating by hand cutting different flowers
and bouquets from a sheet of patterned
paper. I layered them on top of one another
to add dimension. The butterfly was also
nabbed from a sheet of paper. I kept the
color scheme muted to make her purple coat
pop.

Ella, you have this way about you that is so
hard to put into words. But all you have to
do is spend time near you to quickly
understand. Your smile is captivating.
Your energy is contagious. There is a light
that shines from inside you. It amazes me
everyday. You amaze me each & every day.
