Welcome to the first installment of Tool Time! Each month I’ll feature a new tool and show you several different ways that you can implement it on your next layout or project. Today’s tool is masking tape! Right now, you are probably wondering why you would want to put masking tape on your layout, but you will really be surprised with what you can make with it!
I’ve noticed lately that more and more people have been using masking tape on their layouts in one form or another. Some people use it as an embellishment. Others make items out of it such as flowers or photo corners. The possibilities are endless with what you can do with it!
Take a look at Ronda’s layout. Not only did she use masking tape as an embellishment but she also used it to write her journaling on. It really makes the journaling one of the main focal points of her layout. If you are a digital scrapper, you can use masking tape as well. I love how Kelly used masking tape as part of her title. This can easily be translated into a traditional layout!

Design notes: I started the layout by using a toothbrush and black paint to splatter the orange cardstock. Next using a craft knife and ruler, I cut out the Sassafras paper. I notice I had these little bits of the puzzle left over so I moved them to the edges and stitched them down. I journaled on the masking tape, then added in the rub-ons. To reinforce the title, I used "12"s all over the layout.

Twelve by Ronda Palazzari. Supplies: Paper: American Crafts, Sassafras Lass, Hambly Studios, Rub-ons: Scenic Route, Sassafrass Lass, Brads: 7Gypsies, Carolee’s Creations, Paint: Delta, Other: masking tape.
Journaling:
We
have
noticed
that
shift
from boy
to teen.
The
voice is
starting
to
crack.
You want
your
privacy.
You look
to do
things
on your
own. I
often
hear,
"Mom,
I'm not
a kid
anymore."
It is
hard for
me buddy
to let
go. I am
happy
that you
still
talk to
me, that
hugs are
ok -
even if
they are
just at
home. I
am
amazed
at
watching
you grow
from boy
to man.
For now,
I am
just
going to
embrace
the teen
in you.

Editor’s
notes: I
love how
Kelly
used the
digital
masking
tape for
her
title.
You can
easily
do this
with a
traditional
layout
as well.

Zone Out by Kelly Buckley. Digital Supplies: Paper: Made to Play Vol. 1 by Spotted Dog Designs, Tape from Masking Tape Alpha by Spotted Dog Designs, Letters from Messy Machine Stitch Alpha by Emily Merritt, Stamp from Bubble Wrap Stamps by Emily Merritt, Clouds from Stitched Art Pieces by Kathryn Wilson Designs, Striped paper and glitter from Intrinsic by Kathryn Wilson Designs (We Are Storytellers), Font: SD Little Nemo by Sausan Designs.
Journaling: Your head might as well be in the clouds. Sometimes you get so focused on the TV. We were dying eggs and your cartoons were on in the background, and this is what I saw when I looked over at you, lost in space. Totally zoned out. You TV addict :)

Design notes: To make the “j” stand out more from the rest of the page, I outlined the paper design with Stickles, added some gems, and then stitched around the entire letter.

Jaina by Diana Brodeur. Supplies: Paper: Pebbles, Inc., BasicGrey, Flower: Pink Paislee, Gems: Jenni Bowlin Studio, BasicGrey, Stamps: Studio Calico, Punch: Martha Stewart, Pen: ZIG, Ink: Tsukineko, Font: Vintage Typewriter, Floss: DMC Floss, Glitter: Ranger.
Journaling: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, two people fell in love and got married. These two people were Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa. Over time, their love grew even stronger and new life was created. Shortly after that, Leia brought a set of twins to the world, Jaina and Jacen. This my dear little one is where your name came from. Your Daddy was really into reading all the Star Wars books when I was pregnant with you. While we were trying to settle on a name, he had mentioned the name Jaina. I absolutely loved it! From then on we both knew that was the perfect name for you!
