Setting the Scene

One of the easiest places to journal about involves home.  Do you have a childhood house, vacation cottage, log cabin or even a pop-up camper?  You might have a favorite room that elicits a specific feeling when you think about it.  Open your front door and look around.  My husband and I take a familiar route almost every day in the summer, walking with our two children.  One day, I grabbed my camera and took it with me, anxious to capture my surroundings.  These are the places I hope my children remember fondly.  I can help them by creating a page.

To add interest to your writing, consider using figurative language.  Throw in a metaphor or simile to really allow your words to come to life.  Another technique involves the use of personification.  Personification involves giving an inanimate object human-life traits or qualities.  “The harsh wind slapped my cheek” is a specific example of this literary device.  It is a great way to be creative with your writing.

Each of the layouts below is about a familiar place.  The artists have created a mood or atmosphere with their images and words.  Read carefully and see if you can spot the example of personification.

A place can hold special meaning in our lives, bringing back tons of memories upon visiting.  Be sure to make a list of such places today and get scrapping tomorrow!

Design notes:  I like to mix alphabet stickers & love to layer things on my layouts.  I used personification in my journaling.

Back Yard Swing by Christina Klauer.  Supplies:  Paper:   Sassafras Lass, Cardstock:  Bazzill Basics Paper, Alphabet:  American Crafts, Rub-ons:  Pink Paislee, Tag:  7Gypsies, Sketch:  PageMaps, Pen:  Sharpie, Other:  buttons.

Journaling: Watching my girl’s with their cousin’s in the swing in Grandma & Grandpa Grossell’s backyard brings memories flooding back twenty two years of my own childhood. Grandpa & Grandma Grossell’s house has always held a special place in my heart. Their house was long & stretched out around the corner like a big smile to greet me when I came to visit. I have so many fond childhood memories from their home. One of my favorite memories is the Backyard Swing. I remember piling on with all my cousins in the shade of the towering maple tree cooling us on a long summer day surrounded by the bright colors & the sweet smell of the flowers in grandma’s garden.

Design notes:  As I was designing this layout for the feature, I just so happened to have sold off my current home in search for a bigger place to expand my family in. I was filled with nostalgia of the happenings that had taken place in our first home which is also our living haven. Our love nest was filled with so many firsts, one of the most important firsts being our firstborn son, Daren. I decided to give this layout a contemporary-vintage feel as that is how my home is right now.

Home, Our Place of Haven by Sophia Soh. Supplies:  Paper:  Jenni Bowlin, Webster Pages, Making Memories, BasicGrey, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper, Alphabets: American Crafts, Making Memories, Rub-ons: Daisy D's, Scenic Route, Other:  buttons.

Journaling:  Contemporary, Comfy, Cosy, Clean, Airy. This is the gateway to our sanctuary, our place of a little bit of heaven; away from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. In this home, it's filled with a sense of peace, love & joy that Dave & I are ever so grateful for. The sounds of laughter that fills this haven of ours. The sight of home that gives us relief.

Design note:  Just a simple layout about our simple house in Indiana!

Little Yellow House by Christa Paustenbaugh.  Supplies:  Paper: Upsy Daisy Designs, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper, Chipboard Button: Making Memories, Felt Ribbon: American Crafts.

Journaling:  This is the little yellow house where I grew up and lived for over 18 years. The house with the slanted floor in the bedroom, the tiniest bathroom for three girls, and we just knew it was haunted.  The house with the alley to learn to ride bikes, the tree to learn to climb and fireplace that warmed us on the coldest days.  Lots of memories in this house, and most of all lots of love too.
