Playing With the
Pictures

Do you remember the fun of
the photo booth? And the cute little strip of
pictures that pops out of the machine? I adore
that strip.
At a recent event on our
college campus, there was an updated version of the
photo booth. You clicked a couple of buttons
and the magic of digital added different hair
lengths, colors, and styles to your photos. I
worked the booth for about an hour and laughed
constantly at jocks with purple hair followed by
college deans and secretaries working an instant
mohawk.
As I was giggling over
pictures, I began to think of my scrapping (of
course). Although I often smile at pictures
with crowns, bows, and other accessories added, that
was not where my mind went. I thought about
those photo strips - one of my favorite scrapping "goto"
items. I love printing a strip of four photos
and then creating a layout around those photos.
This month, I thought we
would look at photo collages as part of hybrid
scrapping. Let's start with just the straight
strip:

Everyone has their own way
of using their software and each way works out just
fine. For me, I turn on the grid lines
(view-grid) and import in the photos already cropped
at the size I want. I layer them over a white
rectangle and then resize it. Finally, I put a
thin black outline (edit-stroke outline selection)
to make it easy to cut the perfect border.
Another fun way to make a
collage is to layer photos one on top of the next:

For this technique, I simply
import all of the photos into one document and then
played around with them resizing and moving them.
Add in some shadows, round some corners, or just
leave them simple. Print and they are ready to
embellish.
A third option is to add in
digital scrapping paper and journaling within your
collage:

For this example, I imported
the same pictures and began lining them up. I
opened this month's free digi kit - April by the
talented Jopke - and added a few pieces of paper.
I typed in my journaling, but decided to add my
title in chipboard after printing. Want to use
an overall shape like my circle? First, merge
all of your layers. Next, create your shape
using the custom shape tool. Make sure the
shape is below your photo collage and then hit cntrl+G to group them together. Not quite
right? Resize them a bit. Merge the
layers and you have your perfect photo collage
shape.
Print your photo collage and
then have fun layering on your embellishments.
Here is mine:
