Discovery Drive

Lindsey Krauss

Welcome to Discovery Drive! Ever just want to sit down in front of a certain artist’s scrapbooks and have a cup of tea while looking through each and every page they’ve created?  This is most certainly how I felt the first time I “met” Gina Johnson’s scrapbook pages – I just wanted to see more! Gina just scrapbooks with so much love and candy on a page, no rules, no direction, anything goes.

Take a look at the depth, dimension, angles and edges. I love a page that follows no rules! I guess what I’m saying is that anyone that can take a mess of supplies and turn them into shabby art is prize-winning to me. I love the down-to-earth, dirty, inky, torn style this gal shows us. It’s perfect imperfection. It’s the opposite of control and restraint – in an absolutely awesome way. Or is it called wild abandon? Whatever you might want to call Gina’s scrapping style, it works. It work for her adorable subjects, it works for her books, it just plain works!

Congratulations, Gina! We wish you much success with your submissions and future artistic endeavors. We think you’re a scrapbooker like so many, but with a style that’s anything but – it’s definitely all your own!

Design note: This was a fun page, just lots of inking, tearing, distressing and rolling!

Still My Baby by Gina Johnson. Supplies: Paper: Daisy D’s, Basic Grey, Stamps: Pink Paislee, Ink: Ranger, Other: ribbon, flowers.

Journaling:  I love that you are two years old and you can still comfortably sit in your infant car seat! Love Mom 9.08

Childlike Wonder by Gina Johnson. Supplies: Paper: Pink Paislee, My Mind’s Eye, Fancy Pants, Basic Grey, Chipboard: Autumn Leaves, Basic Grey, Bo Bunny, Flower: Prima, Rub-ons: Fancy Pants, Glitter: Ragner, Acrylic: Your Memories by Design, Pearls: from my wedding bouquet.

Journaling: It's not a perfect picture, but it speaks volumes to my heart.  Don't ever lose your sense of wonder at Christmas and everyday.  'You will find beauty in everything'. Vincent Van Gogh

Design notes: The top piece of chipboard is from Autumn Leaves Christmas line and I really loved it but the outside border didn't match, so I covered it up with pink Stickles to make it match everything else.

Little Johnson Guy by Gina Johnson. Supplies: Paper: Kaiser, Basic Grey, Letters: American Crafts, Basic Grey, Transparency: Hambly, Punch: Stampin' Up!, Stamp: Autumn Leaves, Sketch: Virginia Tillery, Other: paint.

Journaling: Zeke when I look at these pictures and think of how Mark Driscol sometimes describes and guy or a "dude" I just have to laugh!  Eating grass and dirt is already your favorite outside past time!  8.14.08

Design notes:  I used acrylic paint on this layout, but I wanted a splatter look so I added water to it to get the consistency I wanted.  Since acrylic paint is water-based this works well.  I also added some mesh and then painted over it to give the layout  some added texture.

Design note:

I love this photo so I knew I wanted it big and bold.  Just a few splashes of matching color and a hand cut flourish and I thought this layout looked just right.  I think her little face speaks volumes!

Adorable by Gina Johnson. Supplies: Paper: My MInd's Eye, Cardstock: Paper Chase, Flowers: Prima, Rub-ons: Die Cuts With a View.

Editor’s Note:  Crop your photographs to highlight feature parts. You can also physically photograph this way.

My name is Gina Johnson and I'm a Jesus-loving SAHM.  My husband Tim and I have been married for five years and God has blessed us with two little ones.  Kessa is 2 and Ezekiel is 11 months old.  I started paper crafting through a Stampin’ Up! party about 3 years ago.  I enjoyed it a lot and had started scrapbooking a bit when my daughter was born, but then I discovered that Splitcoast Stampers had a scrapbooking forum and that forum had challenges!  I had no idea anything like that even existed.  Those challenges are really what got me addicted to scrapbooking... and from there I was introduced to the vast on-line community of scrapbooking.  I am truly a scrapaholic. I would say I scrap almost everyday and I'm pretty sure this is going to be a life-long passion.  I've been published several times in e-zines but only started submitting my work to print magazines about a month ago.   I am so honored and excited to be the featured designer this month!  Thanks for the opportunity!

Editor’s Note: This scripture Gina has in her email signature; I thought we’d close with it!  "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Proverb 31:30
