One Little
Word
Think about
the word “scrapbooking” for a moment. What pops
into your head? Do you imagine family members
smiling in photos, visualize paper and glue
strewn all over the room, or picture a row of
brightly colored albums? It never ceases to
amaze me how any and all words can conjure up
thoughts, trigger memories, and remind me of
certain smells, sights, and sounds. Obviously,
I am not the only one who experiences this
phenomenon. Think about those motivational
posters that display one intense word such as
“determination”. These are hung in office
buildings and schools around the world, meant to
be thought-provoking. The fact that there is
power in words is recognized by many, yet
celebrated by few in quite the same way as with
the One Little Word (OLW) Challenge blog. It is
a scrappy place that has quickly become one of
my favorites to visit.
The name of
the blog fits perfectly, as every two weeks one
little word, known as the Word Up, is chosen to
be the focus of a scrapbooking project. The
selected word is defined and discussed within an
elaborated post that always gets me thinking.
The talented and highly creative team members
each take that word and interpret it as it
applies to their life. The final layouts and
projects are consistently stunning pieces of art
that move me. I often experience that Aha!
moment after spending some time there.
Participants are charged to take the Word Up,
reflect on it, and find inspiration. When you
think about it, words have more than one
meaning, can fit different parts of speech, and
are included in a multitude of phrases or
quotes. One little word can serve as a
springboard, leading people in a million
different directions. That is the beauty of
this challenge.
To kick off the New Year, the OLW design team
recently picked the word “start” to be the
center of attention. Check out the beautiful
layouts that have been designed by the highly
creative gals using this word as the jump off
point.
What is
the overall goal/purpose of this challenge blog?
How do
you determine the word up?
-
We each
take turns. Each word comes from our
everyday lives, words we find significant
for us at the time. They just seem to come
to each of us naturally and that I think is
what makes them so significant to others.
The words are relatable. The Wordsters can
apply the word to their lives, sometimes in
a similar fashion to us and sometimes in a
completely different way. It is amazing to
see the words in action.
How have
your personal scrapbooking styles or approaches
changed since you started the blog?
-
The team
agreed that while their styles may have
remained the same, there has been a great
impact on their scrapbooking approach and
philosophy. Participating on a regular
basis has made each of them more thoughtful,
realizing that there is a story to tell. It
has also caused them to focus more on the
little things and on themselves when
creating.
How do
you encourage involvement from the scrapbooking
community?
-
The
challenge is posted on some other
galleries/message boards and on our personal
blog, but honestly I think we rely on word
of mouth. It is amazing how much our
Wordsters actually spread the word. They
link us on their personal blogs, they post
in online galleries, and they spread the
word on message boards. Each Word Up
winning layout is selected and we link to
either the winner’s personal blog or their
galleries. We also post a slideshow
highlighting layouts/projects that catch our
eyes. We encourage our players to share at
various message boards, our Flickr account,
and by leaving a comment on that particular
Word Up. We have a gallery of our winning
layouts as well. We are ever so thankful to
all of our Wordsters, those who play along
and those who visit us week after week.

I can truly can say these design team
members are some of the most
talented, humble people in our scrapbooking
world but even better than that, is I
call them friends. We laugh, we joke, we
rely on each other, and not to
mention we also share some of the same
passions. It feels so incredible to be a
part of this team.

What being a part of the team means:
It's such an honor to be a part of One
Little Word. From the beginning I was giddy
about working with so many dear friends and
am so fortunate to have met new ones! I've
learned a lot about time management,
teamwork, brainstorming...so many things
under the scrap umbrella just from being
part of the team. And honestly it seems as
fresh to me as the day we started. I'm
blessed. That's it really...simply blessed.

Start With Practice by Karla Dudley.
Digital Supplies: Paper, Brushes
(hearts, polkas, number cluster), Stitches,
Postage Stamp Frame: Karla Dudley Designs,
Computer Fonts: Courier New, Sluicebox.
Journaling: So it's official...we're
having another baby! And as a momma to you
guys I struggled with the question of if you
guys would be accepting or not. Well, all 3
of you are over the moon :) And you girls
were all about helping with the changing of
diapers! So I decided it would be cool if
you helped by practicing on Mr. Froggie!
Aawww...it was darling the way you two
worked together to try and put the diaper
on. Loved watching you two :) I must admit
though, you didn’t get it quite right. The
diaper was backwards lol! That's totally
cool! You guys will be great big sisters!!!
