Kit Club

Brianne Nevill

Recently I have been thinking a lot about how we spend our family time together.  With another addition to our family on the way, I have been consumed with all of our family traditions that have just recently started forming and how many new ones we will be starting as our family grows.  With all of this first and foremost in my mind, my challenge to the kit club this month was just that: traditions!  One of my most beloved traditions was that of making Christmas cookies with my Grandma Hahn.  Every year around Christmas, my family would go and stay with my Grandma and Grandpa for the holidays.  She would save some of her baking until we got there and then I would get to help.  I remember taking special time and attention to placing fork marks into the peanut butter ones and making sure my sugar cookies were perfect with icing clothes and candy features.  This has carried on with my own little family as Matthew and I decorate cookies for Christmas now.  We have also ADDED to the tradition as we decorate cookies/cupcakes for almost EVERY holiday.  We bring them to his daycare and my work to share our creations.  From Jenn’s Christmas to the everyday of Dora and me, traditions play a large role in our lives and make great scrapbook pages!

Design notes: These American Crafts papers were perfect for these pictures of my daughter in her Santa hat. I kept the design fairly simple since I used a patterned background and journaled the story around the pictures.

Santa Hats by Jenn Keefer.  Supplies: Paper, Chipboard, Button, Rub-on: American Crafts, Brad: Making Memories, Ink: Tsukineko, Other: button, arrow.

Journaling:  The Santa hat tradition was 'born' while we were living in Mexico.  I wanted to start something there that we could bring back with us.  Santa hats were being sold on every street corner.  So, daddy bought each of us a hat and we wore them on Christmas morning.  We've worn them every year since.  They remind me of the memories we made in Mexico and make me think of the memories in the making.  Marissa's first Christmas.

Design notes: I love playing with typography.  Since this page needed a lot of journaling to tell the story, I layered a line of the word "tradition" horizontally to balance the long vertical column of text.  I changed the opacity on the words to add dimension.

Midnight by Dora Phillips.  Supplies:  Paper:  BasicGrey, Chipboard:  Maya Road, Buttons:  Daisy D's, Calendar:  Heidi Swapp, Ribbon:  American Crafts, Flowers:  Prima, Fonts: Times New Roman, Journaling Hand, Computer Friendly, Other:  clip.

Journaling:  As our "engaged" Christmas drew near, I was thrilled to know that I had the perfect gift for my darling hubby to be.  Throughout our dating, Drew repeatedly asked me for the time.  He did not wear a watch and I cannot manage even a few minutes without mine on.  I shopped and found the perfect watch for him.  Masculine brown leather band that was exactly his style.  I wrapped it beautifully and put it under the tree.  I held my breath as he opened it.  His response?  "It’s nice.  But I do not wear a watch."  Sure, but now he had a nice one.  He had not been out of school long and was still working his way up the ladder, but now he had a perfect watch.  Did he put it on?  Nope.  He tucked it back under the tree.  And about an hour later, he turned to me and said, "hon, what time is it?"  I thought he was kidding and I turned thinking he would now have the watch on.  Nope.  So, I answered "midnight" and a tradition of sass was born.  From that point on whenever he asks for the time, I will only answer with midnight.  He continued to ask, but he learned to go look for himself.  A few years (yes, I said years) later, cell phones were invented and he can now check the time with a quick peek.  But still he will ask and we will giggle.  Recently, Zack learned how to tell time and he is more than happy to chime in and tell Daddy what time it is.  It only took him a week to realize that Daddy would ask him what time it was right around bedtime.  And when Zack told him, Daddy would send him off to brush his teeth.  I glowed with pride last night when my darling son answered the question with "Midnight, Daddy."  Chip off the sassy block, that one is.

Design notes: I used the square shape to correspond with the shape of the box and then punched holes in my paper and placed round buttons in the space to represent the pizza and pepperoni.  I LOVE BasicGrey’s new chip letters.  If you haven’t tried them yet, be sure you do!

Anyday Tradition by Brianne Nevill.  Supplies: Paper: BasicGrey, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper, Stickers: BasicGrey, Pen: Uni-ball, Other: buttons.

Journaling: It started on Christmas Eve 2005 and has not stopped.  Then we used the tradition for birthday’s or other special days.  Sometimes we use it for no reason at all! 1-2009
