Sweet Scallops

  Dora Phillips

I remember my first trip into a scrapbooking store.  I walked in and there were four sections:  paper, stickers, tools, embellishments.  The paper and stickers took up about 80% of the space with rolls and rolls of stickers that you could snip off and buy.  For the embellishments, only ribbon, brads, buttons, and eyelets existed.  And for the tools it was all scissors and cutting templates.  Decorative scissors were all the rage!

As soon as the industry started creating new tools and fabulous embellishments, scrapbookers ran away from those early stickers and snippers tipsy with the joy of new things.  But like with all fashions, everything old is new again and those decorative scissors are ready to be dusted off and put back to work.

Design notes: I used a scalloped ruler I bought at the dollar store to trace and then hand cut the coordinating papers for this project.

Begging by Michelle Boeckermann. Supplies: Paper: Kaiser Crafts, Gaffer Tape: 7 Gypsies, Mesh: Magic Mesh, Canvas Tag: Paper House, Rub-on Alpha: Brenda Walton, Sticker: Creative Imaginations, Ink: Clearsnap, Stamp: Heidi Swapp, Other: brads, scalloped ruler, hole punch, Crop-a-dile Big Bite.

Journaling: You wore an ear-to-ear grin on your face as you stood, danced, bounced, and waved while watching the Stars and Motor Cars parade at DisneyWorld. What made it even better was sharing it with your new stuffy! You made sure he had a good view of the characters as they drove by. Jeremy (and Goofy) February, 2008

Grin by Janice Badger. Digital Supplies: Paper from Naturally Krafty No. 3 by Katie Pertiet (Designer Digitals), Colors by Jesse Edwards (Designer Digitals), Peek-a-boo Metals by Tracy Ann Designs (Tracy Ann Designs), Stitching from Puckered Place by Dora's Designs (Scrapstreet.com), Scalloped template from Wonky Templates Vol. 1 by Lauren Reid (Little Dreamer Designs), Alpha from Seasalt Alpha by Katie Pertiet (Designer Digitals), Brads from Brad Bonanza by Pattie Knox (Designer Digitals), Overlay from 12x12 Distressed Edge Overlays No. 7 by Anna Aspnes (Designer Digitals), Font: Mayfield.

Design note: I wanted to "dress up" the scallops and have them lead the viewer's eye down the journaling to the photo strip. So I started with the wonky scalloped curved template, but wanted the edge of it to be accented with stitching. To make the scalloped stitching, I took one stitched circle, sized it to fit, and copied it down the inner edge of the scallops, making the sure the circles overlapped and were a similar distance from the edge. I merged the stitched circles into one layer, then erased the left-hand side of each circle, leaving only the scalloped edge. It was still too plain for me, so I used the circular marquee to "punch" holes inside the stitched layer, then put brads in for a bit of glimmer.

Design notes: I put the photo collage together on the computer overlaying the photos and rounding the corners.  After printing I just needed to cut the outline carefully.  Much less work than doing them all and layering them by hand.

Play by Dora Phillips.  Supplies:  Paper and Ribbon:  Pink Paislee,  Flowers:  Prima, Chipboard:  Maya Road, Bling:  Heidi Swapp, Fonts:  Yearbook, Distressed Typewriter, Simple Script.
