Digital Detour

Jennifer Hennegan

Our Digital Detour takes us to someplace nice and warm this month: Arizona, home to Tangie Baxter, this month’s featured designer.

Like so very many of us, Tangie began her journey into scrap booking in the late 80s while she was still in high school.   You remember the time, before there were stores with aisle after aisle of supplies dedicated to paper crafts.  Her family and friend would beg her to create albums for them.  They kept her pretty busy throughout high school.   After that, she didn’t scrap very often.  She would pull out all of her supplies twice a year and “power scrap” for two weeks at her kitchen table.  She just couldn’t stand the mess and so in 2007 she made the switch to digital.  Now, she can work for a few minutes here and there with no mess to worry about.  She does, occasionally, bring out her paper supplies, but only to work in her “junque journal” or ATCs (Artist Trading Cards).

She is ashamed to admit that she only creates about four layouts a month and even that is a stretch for her sometimes.  Her favorite layout that she created is called “A Life Worth Living”. It includes elements of her own creation as well as those of one of the designers she CTs for, Christina Renee Designs.  She says that she was inspired to create a layout that captured her essence on one 12x12 page.  “It was a great adventure to set out on and I love the way it turned out.”

Design notes:  I wanted to capture "who I was," in essence my story, on one page!

A Life Worth Living by Tangie Baxter.  Supplies: Enchanted Pixies, Blinged Out the Staples, Vintage Studio Frames, Vintage Gallery Frames, Vintage Musuem Frames, and Glitter Disorder by Tangie Baxter Designs, Miniature Frames, Ultimate Art Collection, Spunky Flowers, Shooting Stars by Christina Renee Designs,  Shabby Circus Kit by Madame Mim (Cat Scraps),  Chamres d'Antan Kit,  Chamres d’Antan add-on Kit, and Perfect Day Kit by Annie Manning aka Paint the Moon (Oscraps),  My Collection Staples by Studio Maya (Scrapbook Graphics),  Flower Mania by Jofia Designs (The Digi Chick),  Ribbon Stitches, Essentials, Variations by Natali Designs; Sparkle from Glitter Styles by Flergs; Font: Dear Joe Four.

Journaling: every life worth living is a story worth telling

Tangie ventured into designing in the spring of 2007.  At that time she was doing “family websites” where families could share their stories and photos.  She felt there had to be an easier way and she set about teaching herself how to use the entire CS2 software package.  In October of that same year she opened her own store.  Still, she was longing to be a part of a bigger community.  She has since been asked to be a part of Scrapbookgraphics.

She feels she’s being a bit cliche when she says that she finds her inspiration everywhere.  “I am constantly saying, ‘Oooh, that would be a great kit.’”  Once, while attending a Broadway Across America play she loved the pattern of the dress the lady in front of her was wearing.  That night she created a kit based on the dress.  Her love of “all things altered” also shows through in her designs.

Design notes: When I created this layout I was learning how to do shadows and "out of bounds" look. It is a fairly early layout of mine but I still love it.

Believe by Tangie Baxter.  Supplies:  Wallpaper, Base Coats from Motion Picture, Glitter Greenery from Spring Forest Floor: The Foliage, Frame from Vintage Gallery Frames, Gate from Her Royal Court, all by Tangie Baxter Designs, Assorted Greenery & Silver Flowers from Essentials by Natali Designs, Orchid from Charmes d’Antan by Annie Manning aka Paint the Moon, Holder/Paper from Book Plate Alphabet by Christina Renee.

Journaling: believe and you shall see what others cannot

Tangie aims to create at least two kits a month but she usually ends up with six and a couple of element sets.  This is her full-time job and she takes it very seriously.  She has a set work schedule for herself and has been known to work 18-hour days!   Her newest kit is always her favorite.  “I feel like I’m growing by leaps and bounds as a designer right now.”  Some of her very favorite kits are collaborations that she has done with other designers.  Sherriejd is one of her favorite designers to work with, “I feel like some of my best work happens when we are feeling the vibe on a kit.”  Their most recent kit is “The Enchanted Art Box.”

17 Cherry Tree Lane; if you know this address than chances are you will love Tangie’s latest kit.  It’s a Scrapbookgraphics collaboration with Flergs  and it’s the house address from Mary Poppins.  It started out as a cherry-themed kit.  After receiving inspiration from some Google images they decided on color palette and then set to work.  “The result is a huge collaboration full of sparkle, vintage charm and of course, tons of cherries!”
