Discovery Drive

Lindsey Krauss

Welcome to a very special edition of Discovery Drive! Who knew, months ago, that we had truly discovered a diamond in the rough! You just have to check out more about this spectacular scrapper – known as Janis G. Medina-Maghinay, Joplin_Woodstock or Elmyra Duff around the Streets, and most currently known as 2nd place winner in ScrapStreet’s Annual STAR contest! ScrapStreet Pit Crew! Magazine staff! What a month Janis has had, and how well-deserved. Would you ever guess she’s only been scrapbooking for about a year now?! Imagine that!

What do we love about Janis? Color! You can tell Janis loves it. Lives it. Might even BE it. Fun with color. Fun with photograph. Fun with all those scrapbooking goodies. All that fun wrapped up together in neat little, vibrant, colorful, sometimes even bow-tied scrap-page packages!

This girl can put color on a page like no one ever seen before. No need for shades, you really want to see this bright! All that and somehow, some way, Janis brings your eye right to that amazing photo on her page. And that’s what it’s all about anyway, right? That’s truly some amazing (and yes, bright and colorful) talent!

Janis, congratulations, from the bottom of our hearts, on all your discovery and success, now and in the future. We happen to think that you’re pretty amazing – a quote from ScrapStreet’s own Dora to close, perhaps? “Your bold designs and amazing use of color made your work truly art. Congrats!”

Design notes: I was finally able to conquer my fear of doing multiple photo layouts. Love how this one turned out - - doodling action showcased!!!

Design note: I did this layout using Anam’s Sketch for Scrapattackscrapbooking’s SASsy Scrapper for March Contest.

Editor’s note: If you’re thinking of going “cute”, go all the way! Janis brilliantly combines bright colors, a fun photograph and a silly title to go over the top with cute on this one!

Ponder by  Janis G. Medina-Maghinay. Supplies: Paper: Webster’s Pages, K & Company, CherryArte, All About Scrapbooks, Conchos: All About Scrapbooks, Flowers: Prima Marketing, Ink: Ranger, Clearsnap, Rub-ons: UBL, Other: bling,  metal, brad, pen.

Journaling:

can’t wait to hear

what’s on your mind

have faith in yourself

as I have in you…

Design notes:  This is the closest to vintage that I have ever done - - can’t help but pop that burst of orange in there.  This one won at ScrappinKids Challenge#1 last January.

Design notes: The blurry photo was not really intended - - it seemed okay on my camera LCD when I had it developed.  Rather than throw it away, I used it on my layout and just went with an artsy-romantic take.

I See You by Janis G. Medina-Maghinay. Supplies:  Paper: 7Gypsies, BasicGrey, K & Company, Top Line Creations, Teresa Collins Designs, Making Memories, Flowers: Prima Marketing, Ribbon: All About Scrapbooks, Pretoria clip: 7Gypsies, Brad: Making Memories, Stamp: Autumn Leaves, Ink: Tsukineko, Clearsnap, Letter Stickers: American Crafts, Die-cut: Cuttlebug (Honeycomb), Other: woven paper mat, conchos, bling, paint.

Journaling:  Past the blur I clearly see a kind heart and a good soul....

I'm Janis Medina-Maghinay, a scrapbooker from the Philippines.  I am married to a very supportive husband, JE, and a mother to Nat (3yo) and Phil (2yo).  I started scrapbooking April 2008 and have never been able to stop.  I do mostly 12x12 layouts, but also dabble in cardmaking and altered projects.

My scrapbooking style is a head-on explosion of bold colors, whether it be for kiddie, classic, or romantic layouts.  I have a penchant for elaborate layouts.  I love different textures and embellishments.  Clustering, layering and distressing are the usual techniques that I use, although I am not afraid to experiment and try other techniques .  I feel that I have a lot to learn in this craft.

To view more of my work, you can visit my blog, and you can also see my work at Journaling Junkie, a blog for scrappers needing a journaling challenge, where I’m on the Design Team.
