Wrap-up with text!

After reading last month’s article about the hybrid technique of printing ONTO items, I was completely inspired to do just that. Instead of printing on an item to place on the layout, why not print the LAYOUT and then add to it. By combining photos and text in PSE, you can create a layout that looks “seamless”. Your words can fit perfectly between your multiple photos and people will look in awe at you as some sort of scrapbooking genius. Ok, so maybe not a genius, but they will certainly want to know how you did it!

If you don’t have a wide-format printer, do not fret! By planning out your layout ahead of time, you can still print on an 8.5 x 12 piece of paper and create the same effect. All it takes is making sure that the size of your Photoshop document matches or is less than the size of your paper and printer capacities. The layout below could have been created the same way if I had taken an 8.5 x 12 piece of paper and then adhered it to another 12 x 12 piece of cardstock. The visual appearance of it would have changed, but it would have added depth and layers to the current simple layout. So have I enticed you yet? Do you want to try it? Great! The following steps will lead you on your way!

1. Open a blank document to the size layout you want to create (mine is 12 inches by 12 inches, 300 dpi, RGB color). In separate documents, open your selected photos and crop them to the size that you have determined will fit on your page (my large photo is 8 x 4, and my two smaller photos are 2 x 2). Click on the thumbnails of your photos and drag them onto your layout document. Using the move tool, position them on your page. I find by letting my grid lines stay visible, I can line them up evenly.

2. Select the Type Tool. Select your font, font size, and color at the top of the page. Remember to double check your line spacing with each font! Some fonts dip low or arch high, creating an overlap of text. Create a small journaling block next to your first photo by fitting the open area. Type the first part of your journaling in this box. I find that writing out your journaling on a piece of paper ahead of time greatly helps with this step (and also saves you frustration about spelling errors because, as most of us have found out, PSE does not have a spell check feature).

3. Repeat Step 2 for each open space on your layout. To print your photos, target your text layers and click on the “eye” next to the layer to hide it. Print your photos onto photo paper and then hide your photos and unhide your text layers. Print your text onto your desired cardstock/patterned paper. Cut and place your photos onto your layout using your favorite adhesive.
