Special
Valentines
February is usually a pretty bleak month in New York State. Snow, rain and sleet mark the days with gray skies and spring seems a long way off. I fondly recall a bright moment in otherwise dreary days.
When I was growing up, our family celebrated February 14th, St. Valentine's Day, in a special way. We were probably the only family in town that had a visit from “The Valentine Fairy”. Yes, you read
that correctly, “The Valentine Fairy”!
This elusive creature arrived sometime just before the dinner meal while my brother, sister and I were off playing somewhere in the house. “The Fairy” left candy, toys and Valentine cards at our place settings at the dinner table. Mom made “something red” for dinner, spaghetti, a heart shaped meat loaf, cherry Jell-O, and a heart shaped cake or cookies. It never occurred to me to ask where “The Fairy” came from or how she got into the house. I remember asking my friends what “The Valentine Fairy” brought them and they looked at me like I was nuts. How special I felt that our family was chosen to receive a visit from their very own “Fairy”.
Years have flown by since then and I now prepare that special meal and our family is lucky enough to be visited by this special “Fairy”. “The Valentine Fairy” visits the homes of my brother and sister as well. Imagine that! My mother believes that you can’t have too many of these special events to carry you into adulthood. I guess she is right, as I still look forward to the times I know are ours alone and pray my children will see the value in traditions and carry them forward to their families.

Design notes:
I absolutely love this album with all my
heart! I made it for my husband for
Valentine's Day last year. Basically, it
tells our entire story in our own words. It
goes over how we met, first impressions,
first date and dating memories, first kiss,
our engagement, our wedding day, our
honeymoon, our first home, what I love about
him/her, and why we'd do it all again.
Sometime before Valentine's Day, I emailed
him a questionnaire to fill out with
journaling prompts for each section of the
mini album. I told him how important it was
that he put some thought into his answers. I
answered the same questions and then I
printed out both of our answers to each
question and adhered them side-by-side on
the appropriate page. It turned out awesome
and I cried when I saw his finished answers
(I think I saw some tears in his eyes when I
gave him the finished album and he read our
answers together, too). A must-do project in
my opinion!
