Crossroads Cafe

Lindsey Krauss

Hi everyone!! Welcome to the café! Come on in, have a cup of coffee and let’s talk hybrid!

It’s a lot of fun looking through submissions that come into the magazine to discover what’s hot in hybrid. Today, we’re talking about creating shapes. Large, small, hidden, or right there in your face… shapes are obviously important to any layout. We’ll now find out how easy it is to create your own. Let’s take a look at how these three bright designers created shapes using digital elements.

The techniques highlighted in this feature are creating stars and strips (yes, strips, not stripes!) out of digital paper, printing onto transparencies, and dimensional adhesion. Heather takes customizing shapes to the next level: she created and printed her own flowers and flourishes, and then she printed them on transparencies to get just the right look. Janice shows us a layout with a few digital techniques incorporated; besides creating stars from digital paper to embellish her layout, she also printed her photo onto fabric to create the feel she desired. Di, our beloved Crossroads alum, shows us how to use a digital paper in pieces, layering them for dimension. Now you’ve seen a few great ways to create shapes for your next layout… what will you hybrid next?

Design note: I created the flower/swirl assemblies in Photoshop Elements and printed onto a transparency.

Your Joy is Infectious by Heather Robertson. Supplies: Cardstock: Stampin’ Up!, Die Cuts With a View, Pen: Zig, white gel pen, Digital elements: Flowers and swirls from Lilypad.com, Software: Adobe.

Design note: My mom wished for grandkids for years! Her wish finally came true. The main picture of them was a bit blurry (found out later my camera lens was dirty), and terribly backlit. It would have looked horrible on traditional photo paper. Printing it on fabric gave it a look of softness instead. I painted the fabric outside the frame with iridescent paint. The stars were from Angie’s kit, printed out at the size I wanted, then inked, layered and adhered to the tag.

Wish Upon a Star by Janice Badger.  Supplies: Paper: Flair, K and Company, Cardstock: Bazzill Bling, Brads: Making Memories, Ink: Clearsnap, Photo fabric: Blumenthal Craft, Paint: Twinkling H20s, Punch: EK Success, Other: sewing machine, thread, Provocraft Silent Setter, Aquapainter, Digital elements: Angie’s Back to School by Angela Young, (digitalscrapbookpages.com), Foliage frame by Susan Designs (scrapbookgraphics.com), Software: Adobe.

Journaling: Mom always wanted grandchildren & with Jeremy she now has three. 6-04.

Design note: I composed the card in Photoshop using the digital elements, then arranged the hearts to print separately so I could cut them out and layer them with dimensional adhesive. The stamp added the perfect sentiment.

love ya card by Di Hickman. Supplies: Digital Papers by Corinna Neilsen, Hearts by Gina Miller, and Ribbon by Dianne Rigdon (all from First Blush collaboration kit at Prima Hybrid), Stamp: Kim Hughes Collection for Cornish Heritage Farms, Ink: Ranger, Software: Adobe.
