Digital Detour

Jennifer Hennegan

This month we’re going from the western United States, where we met Amanda Thorderson, all the way cross country to western New York, near Lake Ontario, to meet this month's featured designer.  Dana Frantz began digital scrapping in April of 2005 as an escape from real life and to just “let go” and create what she wants.  She says she went “straight digi!  Never even touched paper!”  and was “hooked from day one.”  A year later she was designing.   She isn’t on any other creative teams because of a lack of time, but also because she doesn’t want “to create something and then always wonder if the conception came from elsewhere.”

“Everywhere!” was her answer when asked where she finds her inspiration.  “From walking in the woods to shopping.  Colors and shapes are a great inspiration.”   It’s color that inspired her current favorite kit, Hippie Fizz.  In fact, most of her kits start out with color, usually green which is her favorite color.  Whipperwill, Dana’s newest kit, is a light breezy kit that started with a simple circle.  You might find it hard to believe that Dana creates one to two kits a month using “old dog” Paint Shop Pro 8!

Editor's note:

Bright colors, combined with a clean and simple design scheme, make for an engaging page.

Unfortunately, this happily married, working mother of four doesn’t find a lot of time to create layouts of her own.  She typically does one to two layouts each month.  When asked who her favorite designers are she couldn’t come up with just one.  She says, “every designer has something that I really love.  I’m always saying…why didn’t I think of that?”

Dana is married to a “great man”, Teague.  The have four children ages 7-26, two grandchildren, two cats and one dog.  The family  lives in Western New York.
