Unity
This
article is the last one in the series “The
Elements and Principles of Design”. Remember
what these are? The elements of design are:
point, line, form, movement, color, pattern and
texture. And the principles of design are:
balance, proportion, rhythm, dominance and
unity. The last principle of design we will
explore is unity.
Unity is
the underlying principle that summarizes all of
the principles and elements of design. The
concept of unity describes the relationship
between the individual parts and the whole of a
composition. It investigates the aspects of a
design that are necessary to tie the composition
together, to give it a sense of wholeness, or to
break it apart and give it a sense of variety.
Unity can be achieved through the effective use
of any of the elements, but the design element
pattern (underlying structure) is the most
fundamental element for a strong sense of unity.
Consistency of form and color are also powerful
elements that can pull a composition together.

Design note:
I wanted to feature a large photo and I used
squares of the same size to frame the
corners of the photo. This will bring focus
to the photo as well as the story. I cut up
patterned papers of the same color hue
(green) to unify the squares. Then I
used word stamps on some, and buttons and
charms to add texture. The squares share the
same color hue of green, brown and cream.

Design note:
I only used one patterned paper on this
page. This paper has both fall colors and it
picks up most colors from the photos. The
three dimensional stickers with a
Thanksgiving theme in coordinating colors
quickly pull the page together. |

Design note:
I picked the green, white, blue, and brown
colors from the photos and chose matching
papers. I used dinosaurs as embellishments
to match the book and my son's pajamas. The
patterned paper and the center border strip
reminded me of the shapes of the books in
the pictures.
