Digital Detour

Jenn Hennegan

Here in Wisconsin we are in the midst of a beautiful Indian summer.  I love Autumn.  Can you think of a better time to visit the beautiful Ozark Mountains?  That’s where we find this month’s featured designer, Kay Miller, from Kay Miller Designs.

Kay’s adventures in scrapping began in 2000 with the birth of her first child.  While she started with paper she became a hybrid scrapper by using the computer to create her titles and journaling.  In 2003, she was creating more and more with the computer that designing seemed liked the next step.  She hasn’t gone back to paper layouts but does enjoy creating hybrid projects and cards.  This PSCS3 user scraps a lot!  She creates for the Shabby Pickle Creative Team as well as for friends and family.  Between the two she creates upwards of 20 layouts a month.  TWENTY!  Her favorite layout is called Daisies.  It was created for Digital Artist magazine. It’s a photo of her daughter and “there is really no journaling, but the layout itself I think is just beautiful.”

Editor's note:

I really like how Kay lets the title say it all.  The simple title lets the bright and beautiful photo stand out.

Editor's note:

I admire Kay for doing a layout of herself and her sweet puppy, Frito.  The colors compliment the photo perfectly.  While I’m sure she meant that the puppy was the apple of her eye, I’m sure that Kay is the apple of her family’s eye!

Kay, who also uses Illustrator to design, finds her inspiration “everywhere.”  I was tickled to learn that she also gets a great deal of her inspiration from children.  She loves browsing children’s clothing and magazines as well as her children’s storybooks.  While she creates approximately two to three kits a month she does have her favorites.  “My favorite kit to date is Simple Pleasures. It just started out as a color scheme that I really loved and I started doodling with some flowers and a little house and the whole theme was born.”  Kay’s newest kit is called Full of Life. It started out as a Thanksgiving kit just because it's that time of year, but it kind of turned more into a kit to celebrate all the things in life that we treasure.  She threw an adorable little squirrel in there to add an autumnal feel.

Kay Miller has been married to her wonderful husband, Paul, for 12 years. They have two great kids ages six and eight.  She also loves animals.  The family has three dogs and two cats.  She says, “I'd have more but my husband set a limit” Her passions are creating and photography. She is the proud owner of a Nikon D300 and a handful of different lens (aren‘t you jealous?  I know I am!). She takes photos daily and never run out of inspiration on their 400 acre farm in the Ozark Mountains. Besides designing digital page kits she is also an avid scrapper (20 layouts a month, remember), rubber stamper and card maker.  She’s a homebody and her happiest moments are spent designing at her computer, stamping in her craft room or taking morning walks…with her camera of course!

Kay’s favorite designers are  Mary Fran of Nitwit Collections, Mindy Terresawa, Kristin Cronin-Barrow, Shabby Princess, Shabby Miss Jenn and Gina Cabrera.  You can purchase Kay’s products at www.kaymillerdesigns.com.  For all you bloggers, Kay says that she does not have enough time in the day to blog.  Sorry.

To show her appreciation, Kay is offering a coupon for 20% off at her shoppe.  Coupon Code: scrapstreet-01.
