Design Square

 Janneke Smit

Pattern can be described as the repetition of shape or form, but it can also be thought of as the "skeleton" that organizes the parts of a composition. You can easily see the 6x6 grid as the foundation of Michelle’s layout. Janice also used a grid, but did not fill in all the blocks.

For a different way to use a pattern on a page, take a look at Brianne’s layout. The background with the photo, journaling and paper blocks is also based on a grid. But on top of the grid she used a single shape of a branching/spiraling pattern to enhance the theme of growing from a new beginning.

For scrapbookers, pattern is an important design element, whether you use patterns to enhance your layouts, to lay out your page, or both.

Design Notes:  I arranged my ribbons in clean graphic lines in order of the rainbow colors. I used double-sided tape on the back of the ribbons to help them stay in one place when weaving them. I also lightly singed the ends with a flame to prevent the ribbons from fraying.

Got Ribbon? by Michelle Tan. Supplies: Ribbons, Letter Stickers: American Crafts, Chipboard: Heidi Swapp.

Design note: Two of the blue papers were layered using 100/66/33/0 opacities to get the color wash behind the frame. I used the complementary colors blue and orange. Rectangles and circles are repeated; the stitch (up arrow) sort of mimicked Jeremy's finger, so I repeated that.

Journaling:  Jeremy and his Index Finger. Oh, that finger held up in the air. Always the left hand. Accompanied by certain starting phrases: “But if I…”, “Mom, this is important…”, “I have an idea…”, “Just one more thing…” This is such a common sight and sound with you. You use it all the time, and I usually don’t have my camera ready to catch you in action. But this time I got it - your hand and finger are actually a bit blurry because I caught you just as you were beginning to wave it around.

Design notes: The picture was fuzzy to begin with so instead of tossing it, I blurred the background and added all of my key words from my journaling to try to bring more attention to my Father and Step-Mom. I also created half of my title in PSE and used the second half in stickers.

New Beginning by Brianne Nevill. Supplies: Paper: My Mind’s Eye, Chipboard: Fancy Pants, Buttons: Scarlet Lime, Ribbon: American Crafts, Brads: Paper Studio, Ink: Clearsnap, Stickers: American Crafts, Fonts: Papyrus.

Journaling: Journaling: January 16, 2008 will always be remembered for a day of happiness beyond measure. Be good to each other. This is a chance for a…New name, New meaning, New family, New love, New outlook, New husband, New wife, New memories, New future, New beginning.
