National Scrapbooking Day was created by the National Scrapbooking Association as a way to celebrate and promote the art of paper crafting. As the hobby has grown and taken over thousands of basements, spare rooms and sometimes entire living rooms, with many husbands bewildered and staring at crates of papers, tools, and embellishments… so has the day grown. This year thousands of crafters world wide will participate in National Scrapbooking Day on May 3rd.

What is it about this craft that seems to have taken so many talented and inspiring crafters by storm? While I can not speak for each of them personally, I can comment on how and why I became involved in the craft.

Shortly after my marriage over 10 years ago, it dawned on me one day that I was forgetting the small important details. I knew that one day I would want to share these simple moments and life lessons with my grandchildren and felt panicked about how I could successfully record these memories. I had a great example growing up from my mother as she was religious (almost) about writing in her journal. We use to joke in my house and say “if it’s not in the journal…it didn’t really happen” as everything went into the journal.

Design note: I used a scrap of paper for the head of the giraffe, sketched the head and water colored and defined the spots with a black pen. I edited the photo by blurring the busy background to focus on my subject. Most of the papers I used on this layout were "scraps" and pieces of papers from previous layouts; I reinforced them by stitching around the layered papers. Why this is one of my favorite layouts - I love the doodling and the hand cutting I did on this one and the fact that I made this mostly with scraps.

Favorite Giraffe Ride by Donna Espiritu, Supplies: Paper: BasicGrey, Flowers: Prima, Pen: American Crafts, Pencils: Faber Castel , Other: buttons, brads, thread.

Journaling: "It seems that every time we go to the mall and come across those mechanical animal rides, you end up riding a GIRAFFE. Well, of course, at the end you'd still want to ride them ALL! But remember, no matter what your ride, hold on tight and always BE SAFE! ~ (heart) lots, Tita D."

Design note: The journaling was printed directly onto photos after de-saturating in Photoshop.  I used lace through a Xyron 150 sticker maker to create the border around die cut paper.  I added rub-ons around photos and when there were not enough to complete the entire photo, hand drew elements similar to the rub-on borders.

Picking Blueberries by Kim Galea. Supplies: Paper: Making Memories, Cardstock: Die Cuts With a View, Rub-ons: BasicGrey, Software: Photoshop, Flowers: Prima, Brads: Creating Keepsakes, Pen: Close To My Heart, Fonts: Lucinda Handwriting, Vladimir Script, Other: Die cut, lace, black boarder rub-ons.

Journaling: On Photos: If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere ~VanGoh, Adore, Wonder; Around photos: Picking Blueberries, Traverse City, MI, August 2007

Design note: I loved how the BasicGrey paper had the lines already there that allowed me to journal how much this "perfect" really "not so perfect photo" meant to me. The eclectic layered look that the mix of bits & pieces from my stash created really makes this layout feel comfortable, rich & warm to me. So it really feels like it mirrors the emotions in my journaling.

True Family by Laura Shreve. Supplies: Paper: BasicGrey, Creative Imaginations, K & Company, KI Memories, Cardstock: Bazzill, Flowers: Prima, Button: American Crafts, Gems: Gelatins, Ribbon: Fancy Pants, Rub-ons: Heidi Swapp, Die Cuts: BasicGrey, unknown.

Journaling: I just love this shot. We spent the whole day at the park taking pictures for Christmas cards. This is not the "best" shot; it is not quite in focus, some squinty eyes. What I love is how happy & comfortable you look together. Getting remarried & joining families was a big step. Looking at this photo, I can see it, we are a true family, even if we are not all blood related.
