Digital Discovery

 Lindsey Krauss

Welcome to ScrapStreet Discovery-style – let’s get to know Christy VanderWall, our newest digital discovery! Christy is going to show us a very small sample of her body of work today, and it is just amazingly breathtaking. Whether it’s how she treats and edits her photos, or how she blends stock photos with an idea that seemed to come to her in the middle of the night, Christy is just great at expressing the emotion behind a photo and in a layout. It’s almost as though her thoughts and dreams are transferred onto her canvas. Ideas… meaning… emotion… all becomes art.

While Christy is obviously a spirited and talented designer, she is just as diligent and hard-working as she is fun! It was truly pleasing to get to know a little more about this sweet soul. Christy, congratulations and we wish you the best – enjoy your stay at the ScrapStreet “digi” design house!

Design notes: Doing extractions is one of my favorite parts of digital! For this layout I extracted five pictures of my daughter rolling and blended them with the original to capture the moment of that childhood fun!

Play Time by Christy VanderWall. Supplies: Grungelle Brush Set by Brandie Valenzuela, City Park Collection Biggie by Brandy Murry, Stitching And Holes 4102 by Cheryl, Bitsy FRAME Brush Set Mini and Paper Templates: Edgy, Thin by Diane Miller, Bookworm Collection Biggie by Erica Hite, Words To Live By Brush Set by Keri Schueller,  Embellishment Templates: Bent Up by Shalae Tippetts, French Market Collection Biggie and  Embellishment Templates: Photo Transfer Frames by Syndee Nuckles  (all at scrapgirls.com), Software: Photoshop; Font: 1942 Report.

Journaling: The joy of being four...laughing, giggling, rolling down a hill... ...you teach me so much about how to cherish the moment.

Daddy Wait by Christy VanderWall. Supplies:  Fit To Be Tied Embellishment by Angie Briggs, Bits of Mesh Brandie Valenzuela,  Blossoms & Blooms Spring and Summer by Brandy Hackman, Downtown Brush Set and  Photo Masks Downtown by Melissa Renfro, Art Journal Collection Biggie by Thao Cosgrove (all at scrapgirls.com), Software: Photoshop Elements, font: AL Sandra.

Journaling: Daddy Wait!

Design notes:  The vertical lines in this layout were inspired by an art challenge at Scrapgirls. My layout turned out nothing like the artwork, but the inspiration allowed me to try something new! Using the vertical lines allowed me to draw focus to a detail of the photo that was otherwise lost (my daughter chasing her daddy).

He Is Risen by Christy VanderWall. Supplies: Paper Templates: Edgy, THIN by Diane Miller, Paper Templates: Artsy - Watercolor 1 by Shalae Tippetts, Software: Photoshop, Font: Olho De Boi.

Journaling: He is Risen

Design notes: When the Easter season was approaching, I had one of my MANY late night design inspirations! The result was this layout. It uses stock photos for the sunrise, crosses and Jesus and scans of my Bible for the text. I played around with blending modes, opacity and grunge brushes until I was happy with the results. This is the type of stuff I LOVE about digital…doing something just because you can!

Design notes: When I upgraded to Photoshop from Elements, I was so excited about being to do text in a shape! For this layout, I used my polygonal lasso tool to select the area around the photo where I wanted text, then right-clicked and selected ‘make work path’. In order to get the journaling on a slant, I had to rotate it until the lines parallel to the picture were horizontal. After the text was complete, I rasterized the layer and rotated it back into position.

Little Princess by Christy VanderWall. Supplies:  Embellishment Templates: Threadbare and Shabby Fabulous Collection Biggie by Brandy Murry, Paper Templates: Edgy, Thin by Diane Miller, Embellishment Templates: Fabric Curls by Erica Hite,  Embellishment Templates: Frayed Garden by Keri Schueller, Software: Photoshop, Fonts: AL Afternoon Delight, Birch Std, 1942 Report.

Journaling: Sometimes, in between the whining, melt-downs, sassyness  and general four year old girl behavior, you ARE a little princess. Not a sassy ‘give me whatever I want ’princess with an attitude, but a sweet, kind Cinderella-like princess. One who helps mommy with chores, one who gives her allowance generously to the church, one who uses her manners, one who helps her sister, one who cleans her room without being told, one who shares abundantly, one who listens the first time she is told, one who is thoughtful of others. Sometimes you really are A LITTLE PRINCESS.

About the Designer

I live in Spring Lake, Michigan and am a SAHM to two wonderful girls. I am elated to have discovered digital scrapbooking about a year ago! I have always loved all things computer-related and have spent several years as a database developer. What I really enjoy about digital scrapbooking is that there is always something new to learn (and the undo button!). This feeds my passion for personal growth in a way that a 4 and 2 year old can't! ;)

I love trying all different styles of layouts. I think it is great that you can create a digital layout that people have to look at twice to tell if it is paper or digital, but what really thrills me are all the things you can do digitally that a paper scrapper can't! Blending photos into backgrounds, extractions and out-of-bounds techniques are my favorites! Another thing that thrills me about digital is that you can take a not-so-great photo (like mine at the beach in 'daddy wait') and do something creative with them, turning them into their own works of art!

I am blessed to have been chosen for this month’s Digital Discovery and hope you have enjoyed seeing my work and learning a little more about me. Thank you ScrapStreet!!
