Grandfathers, Too

 Christa Parker

His desk is as neat as a pin. It's like no one actually works at it. All evidence of work is cleared away each night before he leaves to go home. His closet is well organized. The hangers are “dress-right-dress”. The shirts and pants hang in neat clusters. He is meticulous. He makes “to do” lists, and actually uses them. He is quite bald and once had a “comb-over”. He got over that pretty quickly with a little help from the family. His taste in clothing can be quite interesting. I have discussed his fashion sense in previous articles. Remember the white knee socks and beach shoes that he thinks nothing of wearing…everywhere? He’s quiet by nature, yet he could probably get the lamppost to carry on a conversation with him because he is so friendly to everyone. He knows everything there is to know about every battle of every war, and he doesn’t consider it trivia. He thinks everyone should know these facts. He is kind and compassionate. He knows just what to say to a daughter in crisis. He is my Dad.

I have a picture of him just after he marched in military formation across the tarmac, in full military gear. He had just spent a year at war away from his family. During the time he was away he missed the birth of two grandchildren. My picture shows him holding his newborn granddaughter for the first time. This warrior, hands calloused and worn held my newborn daughter close to him, and we snapped the picture. I cherish this picture. It has traveled with me, embellished my refrigerator and now has a place of honor on a scrapbook page. Who is your Dad? Where is the picture you hold close to your heart when you miss your Dad? This Father’s Day dig that picture out and preserve it for all generations. And… If you have the chance, give your Dad a hug.

Editors notes: I think the black ink used for the journaling really makes it pop from the page. Gail was able to capture many pictures of her dad on this layout.

My Dad by Gail Simpson. Supplies: Digital Kits: Memories Page Kit by Lisa Carter, June Club Digital Quick Click by Kim Liddiard, Dad Word Art by Tina Chambers, Stamp It With Love by Stacey Jewell Stahl, Sweet Hearts Doodle Brush Set Freebie by Suzanne Walker, Fonts: CAC Shishoni Brush, Times and Times Again.

Journaling: Dad was always there with a hug, an encouraging word, or a joke when you needed it. Dad had a sense of humor that just never quit! I often think it's a trait my own kids have inherited.

Design note: The Picture was mounted on chipboard and then the edges were sanded to give it a worn effect and to give the layout extra dimension.

Grandpa Williams by Libby Mac Neilly. Supplies: Paper, Quotes, Chipboard, Buttons, Cardstock: Rusty Pickle, Floss: DMC, Ink: Stewart Superior, Chalk: Clearsnap.

Journaling: Grandpa Williams – July 2007

Design note:

For the white frame around the picture, I used the foam frame from a clear stamp set, dipped it in white paint and “stamped” on page.

Lifetime of Love by Jami Chalfant. Supplies: Cardstock: Bazzill, Chipboard, Paint: Making Memories, Rub-ons: Heidi Swapp, Other: patterned paper.
