Street Maps

  Michelle McClung

I was so proud of myself the other day as I was leaving the grocery store: I finally remembered to buy reusable grocery sacks. The guilt was just eating at me each week as I would throw away a heap of plastic bags after unpacking all of my food knowing that they would be sitting in a landfill, or as studies have shown, eventually end up in the ocean amidst 3.5 million tons of a floating garbage debris field (that’s twice the size of Texas!)

My goal is to live a “greener” life. I have always tried to conserve energy, recycle, save water and not pollute, but it seems that I need to step up my efforts. Often convenience overrides what’s best for the planet. It will take some planning and extra effort on my part, but I believe I could do it. Margaret Mead had said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

At this point I’m feeling pretty smug, thinking that I’m the planet’s best friend with my nylon grocery sacks in hand, taking my first steps to save the world. Then it hit me- I’m probably one of the biggest environmental offenders being a scrapbooker!

Design note:

When I am going to make a sketch with a certain theme, I try to Google the theme first for inspiration. This sketch was for our SNS Prom weekend and I needed to include all of the elements that you might find at a prom; a disco ball, flowers, long, flowy dresses. Do you see it?

Design note:

I wanted to have fun with this sketch and I love to cluster elements, so I used bright colors and bling to add a fun playful feeling to the picture.

Beach Walk by Michelle Boeckermann. Supplies: Paper: SEI, Rub-ons,: Making Memories, Bling: Heidi Swapp, Flowers: Prima, Large cloth brads: K&Co., Brads: Making Memories.

Design note:

I recycled a piece of chipboard that came with one of my children's games to cut the wavy line. I then covered it with plain cardstock. I used my paper piercer to punch holes and then sewed with red embroidery thread to add some color and texture.

Only You by Jennifer McGowan. Supplies: Paper: My Mind's Eye, Cosmo Cricket, BasicGrey, Little Yellow Bicycle, Bazzill, Ink: Close to My Heart, Letters: American Crafts, Pen: Sharpie, Other: embroidery thread, button, cardboard.

Journaling: There will always be a special bond that only you and I share. You were my first baby ~ and forever there will be a place in my heart for only you.
