Design X

  Brianne Nevill

I gave myself purple hair as a teenager. Yes, you read correctly. PURPLE HAIR! Not with dye, but with Kool-Aid powder. I had read about it somewhere and I figured it sounded cool. My mother stared, open-mouthed, at me an hour later, took a picture and then called my father in the room to look at me. This picture has since been “misplaced”, but the memory still makes me giggle and I am thankful that I was a kid who never feared experimenting with the unknown. That is what I love about The Design Experiment girls. They are a group who are willing to push us with their challenges but most of all with their work as a whole. They don’t hold back and give freely from their hearts. We recently caught up with the X Team and we able to pick their brains a little about their site, their group dynamic, and what we can expect from them in the coming months.

Design note:

To create a 3D effect, I hand cut the cogs and gears out of the patterned paper, layering them, and placing pop dots under each layer. I added buttons on the top for added visual interest.

A Typical Joey Look by Emily Jones. Supplies: Paper: Cosmo Cricket, A2Z, Cardstock, Stickers: Jenni Bowlin Studio, Chipboard Alphas: Heidi Swapp, Rub On: Hambly Studios, Pen: Sharpie, Buttons: Autumn Leaves, Circle Label: Martha Stewart, Other: machine stitching.

Journaling: Joey, you have this look, whenever you are asked a question, or you are thinking. You will put your finger to the side of your head and say: “Hmmmmm!” When you figure out the answer, the finger will go into the air as you say: “I know!” I absolutely LOVE this! Please don’t ever stop being this adorable!!!

Being part of the Design X team: The Design Experiment was a vision that Patti and I had many months back.  We visualized a place where people would be inspired to create exciting layouts and projects, and a place where your creativity would be sparked by each prompt. I never expected to find such talented girls to share this vision with, and I feel so blessed to have a friendship with each and every one of the girls on the team.

Design note:

I just wanted to be whimsical with this layout so I tore, inked, added and added...

This Is Me by Leslie Ashe. Supplies: Paper: Scenic Route, Making Memories, American Crafts, Chipboard: K&Co., Gaffer Tape: 7Gypsies, Ribbon: Making Memories, Stickers: Scenic Route, Rub-ons: Glitz Design, Die Cuts: Urban Lily, Pen: Signo Uniball, Ink: Tsukineko, Other: Felt flowers.

Journaling: "I love bright, whimsy, fun pages. I love to use different things to create. It's just me and I love it. Being able to create just makes me a happy girl. Free to do what I want ~ creatively. This is me! ~And with that freedom I am able to do anything ~ so to me it's uite an honor to be part of the Design X team. I wanted to be able to challenge me!"

Being part of the Design X team: I am so excited to be a part of the Design X Team! I love being challenged, it helps me step out of the box and realize I CAN do it. I love the team, I love the challenges, I just love it, period!

Design note:

I love to use pop dots and sanding the edges of the paper to give a dimensional look to my creations.

Sweet Treasure by Kimberly Garofolo. Supplies: Paper, Stickers, Die cuts; Pink Paislee, Flowers: Prima, Buttons: BasicGrey.

Journaling: Sweet treasure of mine. Today you are a girly pirate. 03/08

Being part of the Design X team: I am so honored and blessed to be a part of this team. I treasure the relationships with each girl on the team and love the fun challenges that evoke out of the box thinking with each creation. Being a part of this team is my daily dose of JOY!
