Not So Secret Crush

Think about how it feels when you have a crush! There is that certain something about the person. As you easily recognize your crush in a crowd, your heart beats a little bit faster, and you are in love! Sigh! Believe it or not, you can develop such a crush on a fellow scrapbooker! You know you have a crush when you find yourself checking out that person’s work on a regular basis just waiting to see what comes next. No one inspires you quite like your crush! This month, members of the magazine staff decided to announce our admiration by sharing our crushes with you! After gathering enough courage, we picked their brains to gain some insight to what makes them so crush-worthy and to find out what keeps them so creative!
An artist that makes my heart go pitter-patter is Kay Daniels because of her use of creative layering that make her pages pop. Her color choices and the way she frames her photos makes each page so interesting. Kay doesn’t just use patterned paper as a background. If there is a design on it, she’ll cut it out! Kay incorporates curling, crinkling, and ripping to add dimension. She builds even more layers on top of that by clustering embellishments together. For her, more is more! When Kay is feeling drained of creativity, she will either take a break from a project to return later with fresh eyes or she will start a brand new pursuit by working with a different media such as cards or altered objects. Being a stay-at-home mom, Kay schedules in scrapping time during the day while her children are in school. After finishing her tasks for the day, she usually has a few hours to sit and create.

We are so blessed to have you as our daughter! As each year passes we
glimpse more of the wonderful young woman you're
becoming. We are so proud of you! 2008
Design notes:
I like to take advantage of the elements on
patterned paper by cutting them out and rearranging
them on a solid colored paper from the same
collection. This takes the guesswork out of
matching colors, gives you more "die cut" elements
to work with and allows you re-create a new paper
design. For this layout I cut the flowers, leaves
and strips of paper from several sheets of patterned
paper, brought them together by layering, and added
a few more details with a pen.
Michelle fell in love with Iris Babao Uy’s creativity, which always works beyond the box to produce a very fresh, beautiful, and unique style of scrapbooking. She is an avid fan of Iris’s gallery, always finding inspiration. Iris loves to hand-cut elements from paper to create layers. Attracted to texture and dimension, she incorporates these design elements on each page. When her mojo is low, Iris participates in a scrapbooking-related activity, such as editing photos or checking out products that she wants to play with. Iris finds time to scrapbook by taking advantage of any spare moment. While working from home, she will take a break to play with some ideas. Most of her scrapbooking occurs late at night while her family is asleep. She sits at her desk in her bedroom and uses a small table lamp to see through the dark. According to Iris, it’s a good thing that she spends a lot of time looking at her stash, otherwise she would probably mismatch the colors of the papers and the embellishments!

Sonia Kertnus has captured Christa’s heart because each page tells the story of her pictures. Christa recently discovered Sonia’s projects and is inspired by her use of fun colors. Inking, distressing and sewing are techniques that Sonia frequently uses on her layouts and cards. When Sonia’s creativity is low, she gets back in the groove by shopping for new supplies. Retail therapy never hurt anyone! She credits her husband’s interest in a hobby for giving her time to scrap. They have put aside three nights each week to focus on their individual activities. He goes and plays guitar with his band while she stays home scrapping the night away!

Ever since you got guitar hero it became your preferred toy of all. You learned about heavy metal & big rock and roll stars of all times. Papi had Yngwie Malmsteen to sign your guitar and you became his biggest fan.
Design notes:
I made the half frame using Cricut Design Studio with the Plantin Schoolbook Cart. The letter U was made with All Mixed Up Cricut font and layered
three times to give it a nice thick chipboard look.
