Cute as a
Bug
Michelle McClung

There’s nothing disgusting about the bugs on these pages! Summer is here and with this season comes outdoor activities and, yes, bugs!
Don’t run; embrace them.
Whether you are scrapping with a bug theme, or creating a page around our creepy-crawly friend’s photo, you have to admit that they make a really cute, seasonally-appropriate layout. You can use some ants for those picnic photos, butterflies for a pretty summer scene, or how about some bumblebees to go with that park picture you have been waiting to scrap. Grab your camera and get up close and personal with a critter, as Gail Simpson has done so cleverly in her layout, or watch the wonder in a child’s face while they are playing with an insect, like Jennifer McGowan and Vicki Robertson have done with the sweet photos on their pages.
There are numerous bug stamps, papers and embellishments that you can find to make this summer’s projects buzz with fun. Even if you are a tad squeamish, they are sure to put a smile on your face!

Design note: I used my EK Success glass mat and Cutterbee Retractable knife to cut out the flowers from the 12 x 12 paper. The little girl die cut was a perfect journaling tag for the layout.

Design
note: For the "bug" word, I
covered my plain chipboard letters with
patterned paper. I sanded the edges to give
a more distressed look and then adhered them
to black cardstock. I cut around each letter
leaving a little black border to make the
letters stand out a little more.
I always use my journaling
to tell the “stories we may forget"...those
funny, everyday moments that may not be
remembered down the road. This was one of
those moments I wanted to record for the
future.

My Bug Buddy by Jennifer McGowan. Supplies:
Paper: Imaginisce, Karen Foster, Cardstock: Bazzill, Bug Embellishments:
EK Success, Chipboard, Ribbon: Joann’s.
Journaling:
We were outside in the
backyard and you came upon a fuzzy little
caterpillar. You had recently become very
interested in the creatures and bugs you
would find outside. You sat there in awe of
the beautiful colors he had...teals, blues,
blacks, and yellows. You watched him crawl
around on leaves, grass and even on your
finger. You told me very matter-of-factly,
"Mommy, I am going to call him Green Bean."
You were quite proud of yourself and I
honestly have no idea where you came up with
that name. You wanted to bring him inside to
your room, but we weren't really sure we
wanted him in the house. We found a bug jar
that Aunt Kathleen had given you for your
birthday the year before. You added leaves,
twigs and grass to make a home for your
precious Green Bean. We decided to leave him
up on the new swing set. You couldn't wait
until the next morning so you could go see
your new friend. May you always find joy and
wonder in all the amazing things nature has
to show you.

Editor's note:
The papers you pick for a
layout can say a lot about the mood your
trying to create. Gail did a wonderful job
with this layout by using the whimsical,
fresh patterns and colors to showcase a
simple treasure.

Everyday Treasures by Gail Simpson. Supplies:
Digital Kits: Tropical Gardens Page Kit by Lauren Bavin
(Digital Scrapbook Place), Computer Fonts: SA Inkspot, Earwig Factory, DSP Gundi.
Journaling:
I believe that things
happen in our lives for a reason. Call it
Divine Intervention, luck, or
fate...whatever it is, the reason is not
often clear to us until time has passed, and
we look back and remember the circumstances
that bring us to where we are. Sometimes we
question our fate (why me?) and at other
times, we embrace it. Sometimes we're not
even aware of an event occurring in our
lives that have an impact on it for a long
time. Too often, we fight our destiny and
try to change it, and regret it if we are
successful. We rush through our lives,
instead of taking it a bit at a time. Unlike
this tiny creature, which inches along its
way, basking in the sun and enjoying a warm
fall day, we forget to take time and bask in
the sun ourselves, enjoying the blessings we
have or the good things about being where we
are. The inchworm is a reminder to me to
slow down...take a deep breath...appreciate
the good things that happen in my life. To
count my blessings. To bask in the
sun....and enjoy the everyday treasures.
