Welcome to the first Digital Discovery of summer! I’m sure you’re ready for some summer fun, so let’s bring it on… come meet Mars Olsen! Mars is a cheery gal that we picked up on while she was quietly sharing in our gallery. Her work is simply stunning in its color and design. No page seems similar to the one before and these four pages of hers only begin to do her talent justice. Mother, grandmother and cat-lover, she has plenty of subjects to keep her busy, and she continually pulls out big pages with big personality. I think what caught our eye the most was her use of close-ups in her photography choices paired with perfectly balanced embellishments and page design.

Seemingly as knowledgeable as she is talented, be sure to read through the design notes, all written by the artist, to get a better feel of her technique. Notice how often in her work that “actions” speak louder than words. She has multiple wonderful ideas, using digital scrapbooking processes to their fullest potential, yet still delivers pages that she just makes look so easy.

Congratulations, Mars, on capturing a featured spot in the Digital Discovery design studio. We look forward to seeing much more of your work!

Design note: This is an all-digital layout using a paper scrapping style. For this favorite photo of my grandson, I loved the wonderful grungy texture, trendy elements, bold patterns and colors to add depth and richness to my page.

Sweet Boy by Mars Olson. Supplies: Basic Boy page kit, Corrugated Captions word art, Aged Stencil Alphabet, Twill Tape Alphabet, all by Lauren Bavin (digitalscrapbookplace.com), Font:Army by Cosmi.

Play by Mars Olson. Supplies: Flutterby Fancies Page Kit, Custom Fill Chipboard Alpha – Toony, Bluebird of Happiness Page Kit - ring of circles, All by Lauren Bavin (digitalscrapbookplace.com), Font: Chachie.

Design note: The slightly grunged papers and delightful collection of elements went well with my little granddaughter at the playground. I lowered the opacity and erased the edges of one photo to blend into the background and filled a big bold alpha with paper to match the frame.

Natural Beauty by Mars Olson. Supplies: Brushed Away Kit , April Showers Kit, taped frame, wire: Ain't Too Shabby Overlay Set, The Scrap Heap #2 clips, paper clip: Easter Bonnet Kit (all by Rene' Bross), stickpin: Keepsakes Stamp Set by Marcee Duggar, Natural Beauty word art by Suzanne C. Walker (all at digitalscrapbookplace.com), Font: CK Venezia.

Design note: This is an all-digital layout with a paper scrapped style. The soft, pretty pastels and dainty elements give a very girly appeal for my little granddaughter, Mateja.

Design note: This is an all-digital layout using overlays for a delicate, graphic style. I did an extraction on the photo of my granddaughter, Madelyn, and surrounded her with flowers in various blends and opacity. The cross-stitch overlay adds a 3D needlework dimension. (The detail may be somewhat lost in web resizing)

Rainbow Colours by Mars Olson. Supplies: Poppy Meadow Overlay, Cross stitch Overlay, Poppy Meadow page Kit, A Collectors Tray For The Garden, Charming Gardens Victorian Add-On Pack, Charming Gardens Enchanted kit, Charming Gardens Victorian kit, Vanilla page kit Lavender & Roses page kit (all by Meryl Bartho), Fantasy Garden Overlay Stack by Lauren Bavin, Rainbow Colors wordart by Tina Chambers (all at digitalscrapbookplace.com), Font: York Script ES.

About the Designer

I live in a very small village on Vancouver Island on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada, with my husband, youngest son, last of 6 children still at home, as well as my beloved golden and an old spoiled tabby cat. My grown children live all over and send me plenty of photos for my hobby and I take photos every chance I get. My favorite subjects to scrap are my 4 young grandchildren.

I started scrapping after a visit to my daughter's 3 years ago and found she had a big box of photos of my new grandson that weren't even in albums. I wanted a way to make him a memory book so I went online for ideas. I found digital scrapping first, joined an online scrapbook community and have loved scrapping digitally ever since. Even though I never did "real" paper scrapping, I love the style and often try to get the look of paper scrapping. In digital scrapping I also love the ability to do different blending for a graphic look. I don't really have any one style, I try them all. I love lots of layers and embellishments, especially florals, but I also like simpler clean lines and negative space styles. Over the years I have enjoyed many crafts but scrapping has been the most enjoyable and rewarding.
