The Elements of
Design
Lines also communicate a special
kind of feeling and every line you use in your layout
helps to convey your message:
Horizontal lines suggest a feeling of
rest or relaxation. Layouts in which horizontal lines
dominate feel quiet and restful, as illustrated by
Michelle’s layout:

Design note: I couldn't find
papers to exactly match the colors of the sunset, so I
changed them in Photoshop to the colors that I needed.
The background paper is actually two separate pieces. I
used the eraser tool on the top one to let the bottom
color peek through.
Journaling: When I admire the
wonders of a sunset and moon, my soul expands in the
wonder of the creator. -Gandhi

Photo Overlay, Brads: Shabby Princess, Brushes: Cottage
Arts.
Vertical lines suggest a feeling of
loftiness and spirituality. They communicate a feeling
of grandeur and strength. Reneé emphasized how wonderful
this birthday, this celebration was by using many
vertical lines in her design.

Design
note: I
wanted to create a layout but had so many photos of this
fun day. I came up with this design so I could use
several different photos but still left plenty of room
for journaling and embellishments.
Journaling: Camryn
and Claire became fast friends at Gateway this last
year. We were glad we could celebrate her birthday with
her before we moved to Spokane. Summer

Diagonal lines suggest movement or
direction. Diagonal lines can also be used to create
depth or perspective. Layouts with diagonal lines give
us a feeling of activity or movement; they imply action.
In this layout I continued the perspective lines in the
photo onto everything else in the layout to emphasize
the movement; it looks like my son is riding towards
you, and then will pass you and ride off the page.
|
 |
Design note: Besides
the perspective lines I also continued the
colors in the background of the photo onto the
page background, which makes my son on his bike
pop up from the layout.
