Happy New Year!

Volunteering in my daughter’s third grade classroom on the last day of school before the holiday break, I couldn’t help but giggle at the delight they displayed as they repeated “see you next year” over and over to each other. Two weeks away from one another took on new meaning when it would be “a whole new year, mom!” as my daughter exclaimed. I was still frantically checking things off my Christmas list and not quite ready to ponder a new year quite yet.

A week later, after the holiday enjoyment began to settle down, my children began the New Year’s Eve negotiations. The usual bedtime of 8pm just would not do on such a special night. They began eagerly making plans—decorations, dessert, hats and noisemakers. Whose room would they sleep in and what silly drink could they design? After many giggles and a list made with a variety of colored markers, they were ready for a shopping trip. I was there for driving and paying and retained Mom Veto in case things got out of hand, but they were happily in charge.

I sit here on December 30th looking forward to a New Year’s celebration more than I have in years. I am caught up in their excitement. So caught up, in fact, that I am focusing on fun instead of resolutions. Maybe that will be my resolution—to have more fun this year. How about you? Are you starting a new diet or thinking up a new life plan? Experts suggest three ideas when making resolutions into reality:

1. Get a buddy. Someone who will kick your booty when you need it. Someone that is in it with you. Misery loves company? Two heads are better than one? You chose.

2. Write it down. Buy (or in the case of scrappers—alter) a pretty journal and keep track of your successes and failures. Keeping track can help you see patterns and learn how to overcome your own pitfalls.

3. Reward often. Set goals and attach specific rewards. What did you see in the LSS that has not made it’s way home with you yet?

I hope you have a wonderful new year filled with creativity and happiness. I am off to find a fun buddy and make my happy journal.

                                       Happy 2008!
