Overhaul Alley

 Christa Parker

I can't tell you how many times I have walked the scrapbook aisles looking for inspiration to jump out at me. It rarely does. But on occasion the bright light goes on and I know that I have the perfect solution for that drab layout. This is one of those times: fabric!

Fabric comes in so many different textures, patterns and colors. The selection is endless. Scrapbookers are collectors by nature. Hidden under the bed or in back of the closet I have boxes of fabric that I couldn't part with... one piece from that beautiful quilt I made, one from the adorable dress that my daughter has long grown out of, and one from the Halloween costume I made 5 years ago. Wouldn't it be special to see these materials used in a layout? See... I knew I saved them for something!

Take a look at these layouts using fabric for flowers, stars and borders.

Design note: I covered chipboard flowers with red fabric and I cut some strips from turquoise fabric. I simply cut up a couple of old T-shirts that I was about to throw away. I used spray adhesive to glue the fabric to the flowers and the layout.  I "copied" the sprinkles on the cookie by using a bunch of brads on the flower centers.

Cookie by Janneke Smit. Supplies: Paper: BasicGrey, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper, Brads: Junkitz, Karen Foster Design, Doodlebug Design, Chipboard: Magistical Memories, Fonts: Kabel Ult BT, SBC Love, Other: Mom for journaling, wooden heart.

Journaling: Decorated in preschool - 02/14/07

Design note: I used the new Spellbinders Nestabilities star dies to create this layout.  I even used the die on a swatch of fabric to create the pink star tucked under  the upper left corner of the photo.

Teach Me by Penny Brellenthin. Supplies: Paper: Sassafras Lass, Cardstock: Prism, Stickers: Making Memories, Buttons: Buttons Galore, Die: Spellbinders, Die Cut Machine: Wizard by Spellbinders, Tape Writer: Around the Block, Rub On: BasicGrey, Other: fabric.

Journaling: I always thought being a parent meant helping our children learn. Instead you are teaching me how to be more like a kid. I needed that.

Design note: I used some of the fabric scraps that were leftover from making the blankets for my frame. I wanted to reinforce the story with how I made the page.

Blankets of Grace by Grace Tolman. Supplies: Paper: Creative Imaginations, Cardstock: Costco, Rub-ons-: Heidi Grace, Making Memories, Die Cuts With a View, Lil Davis Designs, Flowers: Darice Industries, Other: epoxy stickers, fabric scraps.

Journaling: This business was definitely an eye opener. I learned a lot, now only about the ins and outs of this type of business but most importantly about myself and all my capabilities and limitations.  Thank you to my family: My husband, who supported me all the way, even when I wasn't making any profit; My mom, who advertised my business to everyone she knew; and to my kids, who gave me the inspiration for my designs and products. You can never really think of such things like baby blankets if you don't have any kids of your own. *2004*
