Contents Under Pressure

Brianne Nevill

Nirvana, graffiti, coffee houses, skateboards, and punk music. That is what I think of when I hear the word grunge. Now say the word “grungeboard” to me and my mind floats to a very happy place, scrap land. Put the two together and you have an explosive scrap style that is all the rage.

Urban or grunge scrapping has been blowing up every scrapbook magazine or book you can get your hands on. The style is filled with many unique techniques, anything from paint splatters or stencils to torn or distressed edges. I feel it to be the most emotion-filled expression of scrapbooking. It grabs the reader’s attention and takes them on a journey through the artist’s feelings or thoughts. Journey with me now as we explore a few facets of this powerful scrapbooking style!

Jennifer’s layout, “Me”, speaks volumes just with the picture. Look at the way she used the shipping labels to create her photo. I often view myself the same way, sometimes broken or in pieces.

Me {Inside Out} by Jennifer Matott.  Supplies: Paper: Basic Grey, Prima, Transparency: 3M, Spray Paint: Krylon, Stencil: Plaid, Shipping Labels: Avery, Flower: Heidi Swapp, Lace: Joann’s, Journaling tag: Heidi Swapp, Brad: Around the Block, Plastic Swirls & Brackets: Queen & Co, Stickers: American Crafts, EK Success, Paint: Ranger, Pen: Zig, Misc: dry wall tape.

Journaling: *loves intensely * creates with passion* believes completely *loyal 'til the end * has faith - 2007

Design notes: I printed the black and white photo onto shipping labels and then arranged them so that the separation is not even to create a slightly imperfect feel and interesting effect. The transparency was spray painted with a stencil in silver. I punched a circle from drywall tape to make the center of the flower.

Chimene’s layout, “You Rock Baby” features her daughter standing in front of a “tagged” wall. The combination of the graffiti on the wall and the graffiti on her page makes the layout flow effortlessly.

You Rock Baby by Chimene Vink.  Supplies: Paper: Hambly, Cardstock: KI Memories, Stickers: American Crafts, ScrapWorks, K & Company, Misc: homemade frame, gold pen, paint.

Design notes: The photo is original. My little girl is standing before a graffiti wall. The only thing I used on the photo is some sanding paper. And I was just playing with paint. It was so much fun making this layout.

By using distressed edges on my half circles, the focus of the layout never loses the reader's attention with an already-distressed background. Keeping everything imperfect also adds the “messy” look of grunge to the layout.

Round and Round by Brianne Nevill.  Supplies: Paper: Basic Grey, Grungeboard: Tim Holtz, Stickers: Basic Grey Ink: Clearsnap, Pen: American Crafts, Misc: buttons, thread.

Journaling: Matthew on the merry-go-round. July 2008

Design Note: I created the pop of color in PSE by adding a layer to my original photo, converting to black and white on the new layer, and deleting parts of the new layer to reveal the color underneath. The ambrosia line worked perfect for this grungy layout. To add a little more urban to it, I used a distress tool around my half circles. I also inked my Grungeboard and then used an emery board on the top layer to create a “used” look. Layout design was inspired by Kimberley Madrid’s layout, “You and Me”.
