Delightfully Frightful

Lindsey Krauss

Truly you find gems in your photographs of Halloween excitement when the grown-ups are having as much fun as the children in costume and at the party. It’s even more fun when we scrap with that same abandon! These next few designs are just a little more on the frightful side, grown up in terms of spooky patterns, frightful decorations and scary parties.

Why not embrace a theme when you have one, for adults or not, like Kate’s pirates on the page? Dana’s taking Halloween to a whole new level, decorating her page like some of the spookiest houses in our neighborhoods. Kate shows off another page using soft embellishments to make a strong Halloween impression.

Design note:

The pirate skull was copied from a card. Fun to trace and make a pattern for your own paper piecing to add a personal touch to a page.

Pirates by Kate Childers. Supplies: Paper: Karen Foster, Colorbok, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Papers, Letters, Ribbon: Creative Imagination, Sticker: EK Success.

Journaling: Jim was Captain Morgan and I was his pirate Wench for our annual Halloween party 2007. Pirate theme all the way! I had a blast putting all the decorations up & making ghoulish food. Our guests out did themselves with fun costumes!

Design note:

You can easily make embellishments by cutting out a section of patterned paper with decorative scissors like I did with the skull. This was part of a 12 x 12 piece of paper. I also took a naked chipboard arrow and used chalk ink to quickly paint it. It gives a muted shade and you can mix colors together after each coat dries.

Spooky by Dana Shutt-Mendibles. Supplies: Paper: Rusty Pickle, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Papers, Adhesive: Therm O Web, Chipboard: Creating Keepsakes, Ink: Clearsnap, Die Cut Tags: Jenni Bowlin, Rusty Pickle, Die Cut Tree: Deluxe Designs, Letter stickers: Provo Craft, Rub-ons: Royal & Langnickel Brush Mfg., Other: buttons.

Editor’s Note: Don’t have time to find your own die-cuts and embellishments? Look in your Halloween decorating stash and copy or be inspired by the shapes of your favorite holiday decorations.

Design note:

I like layering. Sometimes just dropping the papers makes an interesting design. I'll play with that first, then add details. It is amazing what a few pen dots can do to jazz up or finish a layout.

Halloween 2007 by Kate Childers. Supplies: Paper: Reminisce, Felt bat: Sizzix, Craft foam: Hobby Lobby, Tape: Dymo, Other: rub-ons.

Journaling: ...a girl and her ghoul friends...
