Street Maps

Michelle McClung

Soaring gas prices, crazy interest rates, an unstable market - the state of the economy is alarming, as I’m sure I don’t have to tell you.  The economic condition has affected every one of us in some way or another.  A large number of people are even losing their jobs, homes and businesses in this terrible time.  The scrapbooking industry seems to be a common casualty as people cannot be spending their budgets on hobbies.

The other morning, I received a very sad e-mail from my favorite local scrap store.  The owner, and someone whom I’ve come to call a friend, explained that she can no longer keep her business afloat and regretfully had to close the store.   Besides being one of the most organized stores you could ever walk into, it was beautifully decorated in shabby-chic style, and had the best inventory in town; a place that was just comfortable, friendly and a pleasure to shop at.  I couldn’t believe that it was going out of business.  My heart goes out to the owner and for the loss of her dream.

In these tight times, remember that we have free sketches here at ScrapSTreet every Saturday night, and our old ones are still available - head on over to the gallery for a look!  Here are a page sketch and some entries from our sketch contest.  It was a lot of fun, so much actually, that I think we will do another one in the new year.

Design note:

This  sketch is very linear.  Six photos all neatly line up to tell your story, and one large one for emphasis.   Only a few embellishments as I wanted to keep the page neat and un-cluttered.

Map Contest Sketch #1 by Michelle McClung.

Design note:

This was a great sketch to include lots of photos.  I also love this textured paper by Love Elsie.  I rubbed ink over the textured background to make the lips more defined.

Sibling Rivalry by: Keely Yowler.  Supplies: Paper: Bazzill, Love Elsie, KI Memories, Chipboard: Maya Road, Stickers: Doodlebug Designs, Ink: Clearsnap, Journaling block: Jenni Bowlin.

Journaling:  You two definitely have a love-hate relationship.  You argue and wrestle, but 5 minutes later you are laughing and playing again.  I'm happy you 2 are so close and enjoy spending time together (most of the time).  Love you.

Design note:

I loved the clean lines on sketch 1. To make this sketch work for the photos I had, I used 4 smaller photos instead of 6 to fill the space, and to balance out the placing of the embellishments I moved the complete photo block to the left.

Wishing by Janneke Smit. Supplies: Papers and Die-cuts: Fancy Pants Designs, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper, Chipboard: American Crafts, Rub-on: Kaiser Scrapbook, Ink: Rubber Stampede, Pen: ZIG Millennium.

Journaling: Wishing…it were your birthday every day.
