Homemade Goodies

Stacey Michaud

If you are anything like me, the holiday season begins the day after Thanksgiving. After waking up at 5:00 a.m., I sneak out of my house and head out for a day of shopping, searching for amazing deals and the just-right presents. That following weekend, the decorations are unearthed and I spend hours assembling my tree and layering my mantle with pine and other greens. In a flurry of boxes, pets, and children, I take one whole afternoon to make the house warm and inviting.

This year, I have decided to add an extra touch to my preparatory celebrations by creating homemade holiday goodies. I plan on saving some money as I update my decorations and make gifts for the special people in my life. In these tough economic times, it just makes sense. Many of you may be in a similar situation. Well, it is time to put those scrapbooking supplies and talents to good use!

What are the perks of making your own decorations? First, holiday ornaments can be easy to make and easy to customize to fit a variety of décors. The craft store is full of affordable items such hanging ornaments and wooden shapes that are meant to be painted, papered and glittered. In addition, think about how personalized your decorations will become, how you will want to hang onto those keepsakes over time. Even better, use some of these little treasures as gifts to co-workers, friends and distant relatives.

Each designer below showcased her creativity by putting scrapbooking items to good use, making wonderful, truly unique ornaments.

Design note:

I used a 4 x 4 acrylic circle for this ornament. First, I applied the flourish rub-on to the back side. I painted and added glitter to the chipboard star, tying on with silver fabric and a few glue dots. I added the snowflake felt shapes, rhinestones and hand wrote the sentiment. A quick and beautiful ornament!

Blessings Ornament by Kathie Davis. Supplies: Acrylic circle, Chipboard, Rhinestones, Rub-ons: Rusty Pickle, Felt: American Crafts, Other: silver fabric, fel pen, paint, glitter.

Purpose: I love the acrylic look and felt it would be fun to create a beautiful Christmas ornament!

Design note:

The entire surface was painted with the Glitter Glaze to add extra sparkle. The edges of each letter were sanded to reveal the white core of the pattern paper.

Joy Ornament by Lynda Lindley. Supplies: Paper: Basic Grey, Chipboard Word: Making Memories, Flowers: Prima, Glitter Glaze: Lil Davis, Ribbon: May Arts, Rhinestone Brad: JoAnn's.

Purpose: This ornament hangs on my china cabinet each year.

Design note:

I love this die cut Christmas tree and thought it deserved some glittery touches to dress it up. To make the “Peace on Earth” ornament, I embroidered the circle on the cardstock to provide a nice frame for the design; the red grounded the design that includes mostly neutral colors. To create the “Sing” ornament, I repurposed the Maya Road box, which was used to package some of their gems, and created this little shadowbox-like Christmas ornament. I find it interesting to mix textures in my work such as the soft velvet ribbon & the shiny glitter here.
