Birds of a Feather

Lindsey Krauss

Welcome to our two-part series on creatures of flight, here at 9pm on the ScrapStreet channel. Haha, just kidding!

Birds are just everywhere!! I can’t remember when it started but I certainly didn’t get it when it turned into a fad. It makes perfect sense, though, when you think about it. The question is not WHY birds, it’s why NOT birds?!

Birds, in real life, are our very feathery friends. We set feeders out for them, watch them over our morning coffees, get our kids excited when we capture that hummingbird on the deck, some are even brave enough to bring them indoors and live hand in beak. What do birds do for us? They provide a serene moment, a surreal experience, beautiful song, bright colors, inquisitive gaze.

Yes, that’s exactly WHY birds have caught on – and stayed. When we add a bird to our scrapbook pages, they add serenity, surrealism, beauty, color and enhance our thoughts on paper.

Take a look at these ladies – the crème de la crème of birds adorn these pages in lovely fashion. Caroline decides that Felix’s gaze deserves a bird – I love that he sits WITH Felix, not taking away from the picture, but rather drawing you into it. Carrie’s is a sweet as the song. She enhances her daughter’s ‘nest’ in an almost a literal metaphor. Melissa’s little (and absolutely yummy and adorable!) handmade birdie wraps up the bunch – what home is complete without a bird?

Editor’s Note: Birds don’t always have to be the biggest stand-out on the page. Take note from Caroline and use a more subdued bird embellishment to enhance, rather than steal, the spotlight on the page.

Baby Birdie Nest by Carrie Labani. Supplies: Paper, Ribbon, Chipboard Letters, Alphas, Felt Buttons, Pebble Stickers: Making Memories, Cardstock, Stitch Template: Bazzill Basics, Journaling Spot, Pen: American Crafts, Other: thread, embroidery floss.

Journaling: When you found your baby bassinet you turned it into a little nest for all your dolls and toys.

Design note::

created the bird by using spray adhesive to sandwich batting between two pieces of fabric that had been cut out in the shape of a bird. I then stitched by hand the outer edge of the bird, trimming away any excess fabric. I stitched an eye, and added a chipboard wing. I drew on the 'stitched' legs. The tree was created by cutting out a tree trunk shape by hand out of cardboard, and then rubbing paint over the ridges.

Welcome Home by Melissa Priest. Supplies: Paper: My Mind's Eye, Basic Grey, SEI, Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Ppaer, Chipboard: Basic Grey, Maya Road, Paint: Making Memories, Ribbon: Making Memories, American Crafts, Other: cardboard, buttons, DMC floss, scrap fabric, white tag, spray adhesive, batting.

Journaling: (I have a hidden journal tag behind the photograph. It reads: ) This was the first home Alex and I bought together. From the first day that we saw it, we knew this was OUR house. It was in foreclosure - and there was a lot of work to do on it - but we took the leap and purchased it. I think we spent the whole first year painting every room a new color. We cleaned the yard, laid hardwood floors and learned to landscape on the weekends. It is hard work, but we don't mind, because we are home.
