Digital Discovery

Lindsey Krauss

Welcome to December’s Digital Discovery! Reba McNew is our newest designer to hit the spotlight. What catches the eye first and foremost is her photograph treatments. Whether she’s cropping, editing, coloring, texturizing, cutting, pasting or framing those wonderful moments captured, Reba’s photo editing takes the stage in her scrapbooking. After that editing, she takes digital scrapbooking a few shelves higher by adding shabby chic elements, combining soothing color palettes, and finding gems in digital kits all around us. Take a second and third look at her layouts – and you’ll discover all the wonderful tiny details from chipboard to doodling, shadows to swirls… it keeps your eye very busy and very happy! It’s like layering heaven when you look into Reba’s virtual scrapbooks, complete with happy, forever memories.

Congratulations, Reba, enjoy your stay here as our December Digital Discovery and we wish you more happy memories and success to come.

Design Notes: When I saw these photos I knew I wanted to make a freestyle layout.  I love to use doodles and white backgrounds.

Wait!! by Reba McNew. Digital Supplies:  Page Kit from Bright Days of Summer by Lauren Bavin, Floral Swirls by Lisa Carter, Flower Dots Quick Click by Lisa Carter, Primary Brights BackPack by Lauren Bavin, Tape It! Element Pack by Stacey Jewell Stahl, Date Stamps by Tina Chambers (all at Digital Scrapbook Place).

Journaling: Grayson, such a sweet boy. You don’t want to be left out of anything even a photo of the girls. You love to be with them and do whatever they are doing. I love you.  Alexa, Amelia, Abby, K.K. and Grayson.

Queen of My Heart by Reba McNew. Digital Supplies: Page Kit from Queen of Hearts by Irene V. Alexeeva (Scrap Orchard).

Journaling: Amelia 04/2006

Design notes: I blended the large background photo with three of the papers found in the Queen of Hearts Page Kit and played with the blending modes until I found a look I liked.  The original photo showed Amelia holding a toy in her hand, but I opted to clone the toy out and add in the roses from the kit instead.  The overall effect shown on the smaller photos was achieved by first removing the saturation in each photo and then finalized by adding a tint.  I achieved the last special effect in the layout by adding and positioning the wings on Amelia’s back and then erased a part of the back wing to make it look like her hair covered it.

Hot Rod by Reba McNew. Digital Supplies: Wishing On a Flower Page Kit By Irene Alexeeva (Scrap Orchard), Sign by Julia Makotinsky, Frame: Out of Bounds by Elisabeth Weaver, Fonts: Lil Dreamer (Irene Alexeeva), Stamp Act Jumbled.

Journaling: Grayson and Katelyn of the Motorbike that lasted one hour and broke.

Design notes: This was such fun to do! I love out of bounds layouts. I had this girlie kit and just knew it would work for a total boy layout. I desaturated the background of the main photo to make it pop more. To get the shadow, I duplicated the part of the photo with the tire and used the luminosity filter and lowered the opacity. Our grandson was so excited to get his new motorcycle. He rode it for about 20 minutes and then Katelyn tried and it broke. I am glad I got these photos because I don’t think they will get another one for a while. I think our daughter was the happiest that it broke.

Design note:

I wanted to make this a fun layout with lots of word art and doodles.  I used highlighter and boxes to emphasize certain words in the journaling and created the background paper using a napkin from Rene Bross’ Summer Picnic Page Kit.

Just FUN Freestyle by Reba McNew. Digital Supplies: Paper, napkin, fun element, flower binder clip: Summer Picnic Page Kit by Rene Bross, Sweet Pix Page Kit by Stacey Jewell Stahl, Arrow stamp from Stamp It! by Stacey Jewell Stahl, Photo Edge 12x12 Edge Pack by Stacey Jewell Stahl,  Girl Notes Soooo Cute!!!  by Lauren Grier, To The Extreme Element Set 2 by Lisa Carter, Boy Oh Boy Word Art Overlays by Suzanne C. Walker, CreativeExpression Doodles by Tracy B, Doodley Boys Things Brush Set 02 by Meryl Bartho.

Journaling: March 1981 - Billy this is a memory I do not want to forget.  You are 1 year and 3 months old.  We had this AVT, the newest thing. We lived in an avocado grove in Homestead.  Every day before your nap we would go for a ride.  Back then the gas was on the handle bars.  We were going down the trail and I hit a hole, my thumb pushed the gas, and we ended up in a fence.  I was so scared.  Then looked at you & you had this huge smile and you said “Do again Mommy”.  You were never scared of anything but bugs.  It made my life very interesting. Love Mom

My name is Reba McNew and I am a stay-at-home grandmother of nine, soon to be ten, grandchildren which ensures I have plenty of photos to scrap!  I started digital scrapping three years ago and had paper scrapped for six months prior to that.  I searched the internet for help when I began digital scrapping and found a site I loved.  I am fortunate to be on Creative Teams for two super designers, and I spend way too much time creating layouts of family and loved ones to preserve our memories for generations to come. I use Photoshop CS3 for all of my layouts and I love to use Virtual Photographer.

I feel so blessed to have been chosen for this month’s Digital Discovery. I hope you have enjoyed seeing my work and learning a little more about me. Thank you ScrapStreet!!
