Digital Detour

Jennifer Hennegan

Can you believe that winter is here?  This month’s designer, Christine Smith, is from Minnesota where she says, “we get those beautiful white Christmases that people are reputed to dream about.”  While a white Christmas is beautiful I tend to dream about beautiful scrapbooking kits like Christine’s.

Editor's note:

I like how Christine used different papers to create the look of a “real” paper layout.

Como Town by Christine Smith.  Supplies:  Paper from Plain Brown Wrapper (retired) by Christine Smith, Alpha from Typewriter alpha (retired) by Christine Smith, red alpha from Whoo’s Your Daddy Kit by Christine Smith, Circles from Accessories: Notebook by Christine Smith, Font: SBC Courtney’s Journal.

Journaling: The party part of Natalie’s b-day was at Como Town: presents from Grandma & Grandpa, cake and berries and rides rides rides!

Christine began scrapping 15 years ago when her eldest child was just a baby.  Like so many of us, she was introduced to it at a Creative Memories class.  In 2005 she made the switch to digital because she was “enthralled” by what she could do with blending and because her growing family needed the space her paper supplies were taking up.  She hasn’t returned to paper scrapping but does occasionally make a hybrid project and continues to rubber stamp and make cards.

The “instant gratification” is one reason Christine scraps and she says that if not for the kids' books she would have forgotten so many of the memories.  When asked about a favorite layout, she couldn’t come up with just one because she has so many different styles.  She also reminds us that we need to scrap the not-so-good memories as well,; such as a layout she created after suffering a miscarriage: “that’s the only tangible reminder I have of what was lost.”

Editor's note:

I like Christine’s large photo.  What I would have thought of as a mistake due to the odd angle makes a great focal picture.

Jamie’s First Sunny/Fish by Christine Smith.  Supplies:  Papers from Fall Papers (recolored) by Christine Smith at Digitals, Tab from Accessories Notebook by Christine Smith at Digitals.

Christine began designing in December 2005, the same year she went digital.  One month later she was “discovered” when she won a spot as one of Digital Scrapbook Magazine’s Best and Brightest Designers.  Just a small spark of inspiration is enough for a whole kit to come out - a phrase, a palette, a simple idea.  Her newest line is Country Creations.  It’s a little more quaint and classic and is built around some cute and whimsical clip art.

Christine is one busy little elf!  She created two dozen new products this past month and she scraps about ten personal layouts in a month.  For both, she uses Adobe Photoshop CS2.  Most of her layouts are made with her own designs because she designs what she likes, but she does like Lauraskathi and Sophia Davies.

Editor's note:

I really like all the layering that Christine uses in this layout.  There is a lot of depth and some really cute elements adding to a great layout of herself…a very brave piece to create.

Overcoming Photo Phobia by Christine Smith. Supplies: Paper from Krafty Girl and Elements  kitsby Christine Smith at Digitals, Scatterz2 by DeDe Smith at Digitals, Fonts: Black Oak Std and Bradley Hand ITC.

Journaling:  I used to have a serious problem getting my picture taken; even now I am likely to resist…but I am improving and to prove that I am scrapping and printing these unedited photos of me with no makeup.  Of course,  I do have my hair fixed, though!

She and her husband have been married for 17 ½ years and have 6 children ages 2-15.  She also has a step-son.  He and his beautiful wife have a one-year-old son who provides Christine with lots of photo and scrapping opportunities.

Visit her blog for more.   As an early Christmas present Christine is presenting us this free quick-page made with her Crabby Appleton kit.  You can get it here.  And if you visit her store at Digitals you can get 50% off Crabby Appleton.   Use coupon code ed5d3acce1. Thank you Christine!
